DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs overcame a sluggish first half in which neither team cracked the 20-point mark, defeating the Youngstown State Penguins 50-37 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. YSU led early 4-0 as Butler went until Brandon Polk's basket at the 15:39 mark without scoring. Butler used a 6-0 run towards the end of the half to take a 15-10 lead, and would hold a 19-16 advantage at halftime. Butler shot just 30% from the floor in the first half. An A. J. Graves three-pointer to start the second frame gave Butler a six point lead, but the Penguins scored eight straight points to take a 24-22 lead. The Bulldogs finally took the lead for good at 31-29 on a pair of free throws by Avery Sheets with 12:34 to go. YSU closed to within two at 39-37 with 8:59 left, but would not score again. Butler closed the game on an 11-0 run to get the victory, 50-39. The game ended much like it began for the Bulldogs, as they went scoreless over the final 3:26.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Polk. Brandon came off the bench to score a team-high 14 points along with six rebounds and four assists.

Graves was Butler's only other double-figure scorer, finishing with 10 points, five rebounds, and four steals. Sheets added seven points and four assists. Nick Brooks had six points and six rebounds, while Bruce Horan also finished with six points. Brandon Crone added four points and four rebounds. Jamie Smalligan had three points. YSU was led by Brian Radakovich's game-high 15 points.

Needless to say, Butler's offense struggled mightily in the first half. But they shot 61% in the second half, connecting on nine of their first 10 shots after halftime. The constant for the Bulldogs tonight was defense, holding the Penguins under 40 points for the first time since 1974. The rebounding was better tonight as Butler outrebounded YSU 29-21, including 11 offensive boards. YSU held the Bulldogs to just 11 three-point attempts, by far their lowest total of the season. Butler's guards struggled to score off the dribble in the first half, but finally got things rolling midway through the second period. On three straight possessions, Sheets penetrated into the lane: twice finding Brooks for baskets, and once taking it all the way himself.

The brief homestand wraps up this weekend when the Wright State Raiders come to Hinkle. Game time is Saturday, January 22, at 2:00 p.m. Hope to see you there.
