DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs bounced back from an opening round loss by defeating Alabama State 70-61 in the consolation bracket of the BCA Invitational. A Brandon Polk dunk at the 9:36 mark gave the Bulldogs the lead for good at 17-16. Polk's bucket keyed an 11-0 run, and Butler pushed its lead to as many as 15 before taking a 35-22 halftime lead. The Bulldogs held the advantage despite missing all nine of their three-point attempts in the opening frame. That would change quickly, as the first 15 Butler points of the second half came from behind the arc. Butler held its biggest lead at 54-37 with 10:52 to go, but ASU slowly chipped away at the defecit, getting to within seven twice in the final 30 seconds, but would get no closer.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Brandon Polk. Polk led all scorers with 26 points, 18 of which came in the first half.

Honorable mention goes to Brian Ligon, who matched career-highs with eight points and six rebounds off the bench and provided much-needed help in the paint as Brandon Crone battled through foul trouble. Bruce Horan and A. J. Graves scored 12 points apiece. Avery Sheets added seven points and four rebounds. Crone finished with five points, four rebounds, and four steals. Marcus Nellems did not score, but pulled down four rebounds off the bench. ASU was led by Akeim Claborn, who scored a team-high 19 points before fouling out.

The defense appeared to be better, as did the rebounding. It was particularly heartening to see Polk and Ligon doing so well when the perimeter attack was struggling, which kept the Bulldogs from falling in a first-half hole. Butler had difficulty closing out the game, missing several free throws down the stretch, but did enough to get the win.

Butler will now face Lehigh in the fifth-place game of the BCA Invitational. Game time is Tuesday, November 15, at 4:00 p.m. EST.
