DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs jumped out to a seven-point first half lead, fell behind by as many as 17 in the second half, then tied the game with eight seconds left before losing a heartbreaker to the Detroit Titans, 73-71 at Calihan Hall. Butler held a 20-13 lead with 8:15 left in the first half when Detroit ended the period on a 20-3 run to take a 33-23 advantage at halftime. Butler missed all 10 of its two-point attempts in the opening frame, connecting on seven three-pointers and a pair of free throws for its 23 points. Brandon Polk's layup at the 16:42 mark of the second half was the Bulldogs' first two-point basket of the game. Detroit pushed its lead to 46-29 with 14:43 left. Butler slowly chipped away at the deficit, but still found itself down 67-57 with 1:53 remaining. Avery Sheets connected on a three-pointer, then A. J. Graves stole the inbounds pass and found Polk for a layup to make it 67-62 at the 1:28 mark. A three-pointer from Graves cut Detroit's lead to two at 67-65, then following a pair of Jon Goode free throws, Sheets hit a three-pointer to pull to within one at 69-68 with 0:20 to go. Two more Goode free throws were answered by another three-pointer from Graves with eight seconds left, knotting the score at 71. Goode took the inbounds pass, drove in the lane and rattled in a tough shot with 1.3 seconds left. Sheets' desperation three-pointer at the buzzer was well short, and Detroit came away with a 73-71 victory.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME: Horan, Sheets, and Graves. The trio combined for 17 of Butler's team record 18 three-pointers. Horan made seven for 21 points to go with three rebounds. Sheets made five for 15 points along with three rebounds and four assists. Graves added five for 15 points as well as four assists.

Polk finished with 15 points and three rebounds. Brandon Crone added five points, four rebounds, and four assists. Brian Ligon had three rebounds off the bench. Detroit was led by Goode's 21 points and nine rebounds.

It almost felt like things came too easily on offense for Butler to start the first half, then they hit a wall and couldn't buy a basket. It seemed like all of Butler's shots rattled out, while all of Detroit's eventually rolled in. Things looked grim when the Bulldogs fell behind by 17 in the second half, but to their credit they found a way to battle back and tie the game. They had an impressive 18 assists on their 22 baskets, and turned the ball over just four times. However, they were outrebounded 37-19, and shot just 4-of-19 from inside the three-point arc. Detroit eclipsed the 50% mark from the field in each half, shooting 55% for the game.

With the loss, Butler finished the regular season in sole possession of second place in the HL. As the 2 seed, their next game will take place Saturday, March 4 at 4:30 p.m. EST in the semifinals of the HL Tournament in Milwaukee. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
