DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs held the visiting Elon Phoenix without a field goal for over 16 and a half minutes in the first half and cruised to an 86-40 victory at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Elon had an early 2-0 lead, but unfortunately for the Phoenix, that was as good as it would get. Brett James' basket at 18:03 would be Elon's first and only field goal until a Monte Watson three-pointer at the 1:29 mark. Butler scored the next eight points, and following a Rasmi Gamble free throw with 11:41 left in the half, Elon was stuck on three points until a pair of Gamble free throws with 2:40 to go in the opening frame. Butler scored 21 unanswered points during that span to take control with a 29-3 advantage. They led 36-12 at halftime. It was more of the same in the second half, as the Bulldogs' largest lead of 46 points was the final margin, 86-40.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME: Marcus Nellems and Ben Slaton. In a blowout win like this, the reserves saw plenty of minutes, and these two made the most of them. Nellems finished with career-highs of nine points, seven assists and five rebounds in 22 minutes. Slaton, a freshman walk-on, scored the first points of his Butler career, finishing a perfect 3-of-3, including a three-pointer, for seven points.

Four starters reached double figures. Brandon Crone led the way with 18 points, while Bruce Horan connected on five three-pointers for 15 points. Brandon Polk added 11 points, four rebounds, and four assists, while A. J. Graves finished with 10 points. Brian Ligon had seven points and six rebounds in 22 minutes. Julian Betko had six points and three rebounds. Avery Sheets, limited to just four minutes in the first half due to two early fouls, had three points and three assists. The only Bulldog who didn't score was Drew Streicher, who dished out four assists. Elon was led by Scottie Rice's 13 points.

The Bulldogs rebounded from a rough shooting performance Saturday by hitting 57% of their shots tonight, including 15-of-29 (52%) from three-point range. They had 22 assists on 28 baskets, and outrebounded Elon 33-23. Not much more to be said.

Butler next heads downtown to Conseco Fieldhouse to face the Indiana Hoosiers. Game time is Friday, December 23, at 6:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised live on WTTV TV-4 in Indianapolis and as part of ESPN's Full Court package.
