DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs overcame a sluggish first half which saw them miss their first 13 three-point attempts and earned a season series sweep over the Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix with a 63-57 victory at the Resch Center. Butler had an early 12-10 lead when UWGB went on an 11-0 run to go up 21-12. The Bulldogs responded with a 7-0 of their own, and the teams traded pairs of free throws before halftime, with the Phoenix leading 23-21. The lead went back and forth a few times to start the second half, with Butler taking a 33-31 advantage on a Bruce Horan three-pointer. UWGB scored 8 unanswered points to pull ahead 39-33 when Brandon Crone hit a three-pointer to end Butler's scoring drought. The Phoenix pushed its lead back to four twice, the latter of which came after a Terry Evans jumper made it 42-38. Crone made consecutive three-pointers to give Butler a 44-42 lead ahead of the 8:00 media timeout. A pair of free throws by Ryan Evanochko tied the game back up at 44, then Brandon Polk scored six unanswered points to give Butler the lead for good, 50-44. Polk would go on to score 10 in a row for Butler, sandwiched around a Mike Schachtner layup to put the Bulldogs on top 54-46. Evanochko buried a three-pointer with 1:33 left, but Polk drove the lane and dished out to a wide-open Horan, who nailed another three-pointer to give Butler a 57-49 lead. Butler closed out the game by going 6-of-8 from the foul line, surviving a pair of late three-pointers from Josh Lawrence to come away with a 63-57 win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Polk. BP scored 14 of Butler's 21 first half points, and finished with 26 points, six rebounds, and four blocked shots.

Crone certainly merits honorable mention, as he shook off a shooting slump to finish with 12 points (all in the second half) and seven rebounds. A. J. Graves had 13 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Horan finished with seven points and three rebounds. Avery Sheets added three points, and Brian Ligon had two points off the bench. UWGB was led by Lawrence's 16 points.

Butler's defense kept the offensive woes of the first half from being fatal. They held the Phoenix to 38% shooting for the game, and had five steals and five blocked shots. The Bulldogs also held their own on the boards, getting outrebounded by just two, 33-31. It was nice to see Crone break out in the second half. The three-pointers he hit were major momentum swings for the Bulldogs. Polk was dominant at both ends of the floor, and his assist on Horan's last three-pointer was a thing of beauty.

Butler returns to Hinkle Fieldhouse to host the Loyola Ramblers. Game time is Thursday, February 16, at 7:00 p.m. PLEASE NOTE: Early versions of the schedule show the date of this game as 2/15--this is incorrect. Hope to see you there.
