Horizon League Tournament Semifinals

DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs led from start to finish, defeating the Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix 73-51 in the semifinals of the Horizon League Tournament in Milwaukee, WI. The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 12-2 lead. UWGB pulled within four at 14-10, but would get no closer. A Bruce Horan three-pointer gave Butler a double-digit lead it would not lose again at 31-19, keying a 16-4 run to close the half with a 44-23 halftime lead. The second half was more of the same. The Bulldogs led by 20 for most of the half, with the Phoenix only able to close within 17 twice. Butler rolled to a 73-51 victory and advanced to the HL finals for the first time since 2003.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Avery Sheets. You want senior leadership? How about a game-high 20 points, six rebounds, four steals, three assists, and no turnovers in 35 minutes from your point guard. He was 7-of-8 overall and 4-of-5 from three-point range.

A. J. Graves added 19 points, including five three-pointers. Brandon Polk finished with 17 points and five rebounds. Brandon Crone had nine points and six rebounds. Bruce Horan struggled through a 1-of-9 shooting night from three-point range to finish with three points, but also pulled down three rebounds. Julian Betko added three points off the bench. Brian Ligon had a pair of free throws for two points. UWGB was led by Aswan Minatee's 16 points and six rebounds.

Any notion of Butler being rusty was quickly put to rest. The offense was crisp, the defense was solid, and the results show it. The second half got sloppy at times, but the Bulldogs were never in danger of losing the game. A tremendous game, and exactly the type of effort and execution you hope to see at this point in the season.

The Bulldogs now face the regular season champions, the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers, in the HL Tournament Finals for a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Game time is Tuesday, March 7, at 9:00 p.m. EST at US Cellular Arena in Milwaukee. The game will be televised live on ESPN.
