DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The combination of a potent inside attack and tenacious perimeter defense were too much for the Butler Bulldogs to overcome as they lost 73-55 to the Indiana Hoosiers at Conseco Fieldhouse. A back-and-forth first half came to a close when Robert Vaden hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to give IU the lead for good at 26-24. That lead hovered between three and seven points for the bulk of the second half. It was 49-46 when a 7-0 run by the Hoosiers made it 56-46 with 4:22 to go and put the game out of reach. A pair of free throws by A. J. Graves got the deficit back under 10, but IU answered with a pair of free throws and led by double figures the rest of the contest, cruising to a 73-55 win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Brandon Polk. BP led the Bulldogs with 23 points, including a perfect 7-of-7 from the foul line. He also had three blocked shots.

Butler's only other double digit scorer was Brandon Crone, who finished with 11 points and four rebounds. Graves struggled through a 2-of-11 shooting night to finish with seven points, five assists, three rebounds, and three steals. Bruce Horan had a pair of three-pointers for six points. Julian Betko had all five of Butler's bench points. Avery Sheets had three points and four assists. IU was led by Marco Killingsworth's game-high 27 points.

Indiana's defensive pressure on our guards was tremendous. They pushed our offense away from the basket, and forced us to take some really deep three-pointers, most of which did not go in (5-of-26 for the game, 19%). Polk and Crone did admirably against IU's much bigger front line, but without a consistent attack from the perimeter, it wasn't enough. Defensively, they forced 15 IU turnovers, but only converted them into 15 points. The Hoosiers shot 67% in the second half compared to our 33%, and that ultimately was the difference.

Butler plays its final preconference game when the Bulldogs travel to Brookings, SD, to face the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. Game time is Wednesday, December 28, at 8:00 p.m. EST.
