DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

Tyson Schnitker hit a deep three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Indiana State Sycamores a dramatic 59-58 victory over the Butler Bulldogs at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Butler had an early 10-3 lead, but ISU went on a 17-4 run to take a 20-14 lead at the 6:39 mark of the first half. Butler fought back to tie the game at 24-24 at halftime. It was tied again at 28 apiece early in the second half when ISU used a 14-4 run to take a 42-32 lead with 12:34 remaining. The Sycamores' biggest lead was 11 points at 53-42 with 6:16 to go. That's when the Bulldogs made their run. Back-to-back three-pointers by Avery Sheets seemed to spark Butler's offense, then he hit all three free throws after getting fouled on another three-point attempt. A Brandon Crone three-pointer and an A. J. Graves basket capped an 14-3 run and tied the game at 56-56 with 53 seconds left. Crone stole the ball on ISU's ensuing possession and then tipped in a Graves miss with 1.6 seconds left at the other end to give Butler a 58-56 lead. Following a timeout by each team, ISU lobbed a pass to Schnitker in front of the ISU bench, and he took a pair of dribbles towards the middle of the floor and nailed a buzzer-beating three-pointer to give ISU the 59-58 win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Sheets. Avery led the Bulldogs with 17 points, and was charged with defending David Moss, ISU's leading scorer, for most of the aftenoon. Moss, averaging over 20 points per game coming in, was held to just seven points on 2-of-11 shooting.

Graves had 14 points and four assists. Crone added 13 points and seven rebounds. Brandon Polk had seven points. Julian Betko added four points and five rebounds. Bruce Horan finished with three points and seven rebounds. ISU was led by Schnitker's career-high 20 points, all of which came in the second half.

Butler shot just 35% for the game, with no player eclipsing the 50% mark individually. Some of it probably had to do with being rusty following an 11-day layoff for finals, but ISU's defense certainly played a bigger role. They doubled down on Polk, who was never really ever able to get into any sort of rhythm offensively. ISU also kept Horan from getting very many open looks, holding Bruce to just 1-of-4 shooting, all from behind the arc, for the game. Butler's defense was inconsistent. They forced 18 ISU turnovers, converting them into 26 points. But there were far too many breakdowns in the half court, giving ISU several point blank layups which they made, leading to 57% shooting in the second half by the visitors. The Sycamores also hit some big three's in the second half which were well-defended. A disappointing ending for Butler fans, but a great game to watch nonetheless.

The Bulldogs are back in action Monday, December 19, when they host Elon. The game is part of a double-header with the women's team, which plays at 5:30 p.m. EST. Tip-off for the men's game will be approximately 7:30 p.m. Hope to see you there.
