DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs held the visiting Loyola Ramblers to their lowest point total of the season and clinched at least a bye to the HL tournament semi-finals with a 62-50 victory at Hinkle Fieldhouse. A three-pointer by Avery Sheets at the 16:14 mark of the first half gave Butler a 9-8 lead, and the Bulldogs did not trail in the game from that point. Loyola did tie the game at 16 apiece with 12:03 to go, but a 5-0 Butler run put the Bulldogs in the lead to stay. Butler's lead hovered between two and eight for the remainder of the half, with the Bulldogs ahead 35-28 at halftime. Neither team scored a field goal to start the second half, with both squads managing only free throws until a layup by Chris Logan with 16:18 to go. Loyola trimmed the deficit to six on three occasions, the final time coming at the 14:27 mark with Butler leading 43-37. The Bulldogs scored six unanswered points over the next eight minutes to push their lead to 12 at 49-37. Butler led by as many as 14 in the closing minutes, and a late three-pointer from Bruce Horan set the final margin, with the Bulldogs winning 62-50.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Brandon Polk. BP continues his terrific play, finishing in double figures for the 12th straight game. He led all scorers with 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting and was 5-of-5 at the foul line. He also pulled down eight rebounds and blocked three shots.

Horan added 12 points and five rebounds, while Sheets finished with 10 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Brandon Crone had eight points, six rebounds, and three assists. A. J. Graves added seven points and four assists. Brian Ligon had four points and a career-high eight rebounds off the bench. Loyola was led by Blake Schilb's 11 points.

It was a defensive battle, with neither team eclipsing the 50% mark from the floor in either half (although Loyola did shoot 50% or better from three-point range in both halves). Butler's 13 turnovers were its highest total since committing 14 at Cleveland State last month, which was also the last time they had more turnovers than assists. The Bulldogs more than made up for that in rebounding, where they enjoyed a 36-23 advantage.

Butler takes a break from HL play to travel to Kent State as part of ESPN's BracketBusters. Game time is Saturday, February 18, at 12:30 p.m. EST. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
