DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

A hot-shooting Loyola Ramblers squad defeated the Butler Bulldogs 74-64 at the Gentile Center in Chicago. Things started well for Butler, as the Dawgs were up 18-11 at the 12:25 mark, but the Ramblers scored eight straight points to take the lead. Butler took a 21-19 lead with 7:52 left in the first half, then the Ramblers ran off nine unanswered points and would not trail again, taking a 34-30 lead to the locker room at halftime. The Bulldogs did tie the game at 36-36 with 18:39 to go, but could not take the lead. The margin fluctuated between two and seven for the next seven minutes. A Bruce Horan three-pointer with 11:09 left pulled Butler within one point at 54-53. Majak Kou answered with consecutive three-pointers, and the Bulldogs would get no closer than four from that point on. Avery Sheets connected on a three-pointer with 2:24 left, the finals points Butler would score, and Loyola scored the game's final six points for a 74-64 win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Sheets. The senior had another solid effort, leading the way for Butler with 18 points and six assists with just one turnover in 36 minutes. He was 7-of-11 overall and 4-of-6 from three-point range.

Three other Bulldogs reached double figures. Brandon Polk had 13 points, 11 coming in the second half, along with six rebounds. A. J. Graves also had 13, 11 of which came in the first half. Bruce Horan nailed four three-pointers for 12 points. Julian Betko had four points off the bench. Brandon Crone struggled through a 1-of-7 shooting night for three points but pulled down six rebounds. Brian Ligon had a free throw for one point. Loyola was led by Kou's 24 points.

There were defensive lapses, but Loyola hit some incredible shots. Every time Butler would chip the lead down to a single possession, the Ramblers seemed to hit one or two tough shots to give themselves some breathing room, particularly Kou. Butler shot pretty well from three-point range (37%) but missed too many layups. When you allow the opposition to shoot 63% for the game, you can't afford to miss a lot of shots close to the basket.

Butler looks to regroup when they travel to Youngstown State for the middle game of this three-game road swing. Game time is Saturday, January 21, at 7:00 p.m. EST.
