DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs fought back from a 13-point second half deficit to force overtime, but could not overcome the Ohio State Buckeyes, falling 79-69 to former Butler player and coach Thad Matta's squad. OSU never trailed in the contest, scoring the game's first five points. The Buckeyes took their biggest lead of the half on a convential three-point play by Ron Lewis to end the opening frame with a 28-19 lead. Both teams were scoreless to start the second half until a Brandon Crone layup at the 16:06 mark ended the drought. OSU slowly built their lead throughout the half, and led 54-41 with 4:05 left in regulation. The Bulldogs then went on a 19-6 run, capped by a deep A. J. Graves three-pointer with 0:07 left, to tie the game and force overtime. It was the first time since the opening tip that the Bulldogs tied the game.

A Je'Kel Foster layup with 4:01 left in overtime gave the Buckeyes the lead for good at 64-62. The closest the Bulldogs would get would be at 65-64 following a Crone layup with 2:46 left. OSU outscored Butler 14-5 from that point, earning a hard-fought 79-69 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Crone. Brandon played his tail off at both ends of the floor. Faced with the challenge of defending Terence Dials, Brandon played hard on defense, certainly not stopping Dials, but doing a tremendous job of limiting the damage, considering the size he gave up. Offensively, Crone snapped out of the scoring funk he suffered in Wyoming, finishing with a career-high 27 points, including 5-of-7 from three-point range. He also led the Bulldogs with seven rebounds, six assists, two steals, and no turnovers in 39 minutes.

Graves was Butler's other double figure scorer, finishing with 13 points. Bruce Horan finished with nine points. Brandon Polk added eight points. Marcus Nellems had five points off the bench. Avery Sheets finished with three points and five assists. Julian Betko had two points, four rebounds, and three assists. Brian Ligon also had two points. OSU was led by Dials' 24 points.

I was very impressed by the tenacity and heart the team showed when they were down 13. The past couple of years, the Bulldogs would most likely have been finished at that point, but this team refused to give up. Crone's effort when his teammates were struggling offensively was huge. With all our leading scorers having trouble scoring, Brandon stepped up and stepped up big. I'm not much for moral victories, and I know the team isn't satisfied with a loss, but they showed a lot of things tonight that can hopefully be built upon as the season progresses.

Butler continues its two-game Big Ten road trip with a visit to Michigan to face the Wolverines. Game time is Saturday, November 26, at 2:00 p.m. EST.
