DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead, weathered a dry spell, and took control of the game in the second half, opening the home schedule with an 82-61 victory over the Tulane Green Wave. The Bulldogs scored the game's first 10 points before a Quincy Davis layup at the 17:48 mark put the visitors on the scoreboard. Butler built an 11-point lead at 22-11 with 13:14 to go in the half, but Tulane went on a 9-0 run to get within two. That was as close as they would get, as the Bulldogs slowly pushed their lead out to eight at halftime, 40-32. A 13-4 run to start the second half put the Dawgs in command, and their lead would not dip below 14 for the remainder of the contest. Their biggest lead came at 77-54 and again at 79-56 following a pair of Drew Streicher free throws with 2:07 left, and the Bulldogs cruised to an 82-61 win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Brandon Polk. BP picked up right where he left off at Michigan, leading all scorers with 26 points along with six rebounds.

Avery Sheets added 16 points and four assists. A. J. Graves battled through a 3-of-12 shooting night to add 14 points and four assists. Also impressive was that Sheets and Graves, the two Bulldogs handling the ball most often, combined for 64 minutes of turnover-free basketball. The other Bulldog finishing in double figures was Bruce Horan, who had 12 points and three three-pointers, the last of which made him Butler's all-time leader in career three's made, passing former high school and college teammate Darnell Archey's mark of 217. Conratulations, Bruce! Brandon Crone had five points, four rebounds, and three assists. Julian Betko added four points and three steals. Streicher had three points, while Brian Ligon added two points and two blocks. Tulane was led by Davis' 12 points.

Both head coach Todd Lickliter and Polk himself gave credit to Butler's perimeter attack for Polk's continued success, noting that with four outside shooters on the floor, Brandon sees primarily one-on-one defensive matchups, and he uses his many skills to break down his defender and score points. Polk also noted the three-point attack spreads the defense out and gives him more space to maneuver. For the game, Butler shot 47% overall, 42% from three-point range, and shot 78% from the foul line on an impressive 36 attempts. Tulane came in averaging 26.5 fouls per game, and held true to form with 27 fouls tonight. The Green Wave outrebounded Butler 37-24, but the Bulldogs forced 17 Tulane turnovers while committing just six themselves. Even with the rebounding deficit, second chance points were even at 12 apiece, while Butler held a commanding 26-5 advantage in points off turnovers. If they continue to defend that way and successfully convert turnovers into points, they can withstand a rebounding deficit on most nights.

The Bulldogs next face in-state rival Ball State in Muncie. Game time is Saturday, December 3, at 7:00 p.m. EST. The game will be broadcast in Indianapolis on WNDY-TV 23 as well as other affiliates across the state on the Ball State Sports Network.
