Indianapolis – Detroit came to Butler's historic Hinkle Fieldhouse zero-for-the-twenty-first century and when the game ended they were still zero-for-the-twenty-first century.
With some tough defense and timely shooting the Bulldogs (9-6, 2-1 HL) took the Titans down 64-52 before a crowd of 3,256 that seemed like over 5,000 as they screamed and cheered the home team to victory.
With a lay up by Torvoris Baker, Detroit took a 2-0 lead which was one of only two leads the Titans had during the game. The other came at the 6:52 mark in the first half when they went up by one on a three-pointer by Ben Green
From that point on it was all Butler. The Bulldogs led 32-24 at the half. Coming out from the half, Butler's Avery Sheets hit a three to push the lead to 11 points and the closest the Titans could get in the second half was seven points at the 4:31.
Whenever Detroit started to make a run, Butler's defense would clamp down enough to allow the Bulldog offense to put some points on the board.
"Anytime you get a win against Detroit you feel really good, because it is always a battle to try and score. They go to the boards and get twenty offensive rebounds, they're tough," said a relieved Butler coach Todd Lickliter.
He added, "They have come off some tough stuff, with Brandon Cotton being out and [Ryvon] Covile out. But you know what you are going to get when you play them. You know you are going to have to be on top of your game."
Butler's Brandon Polk led all scorers with 23 points in a 7-14 shooting performance and an impressive 9 for 11 from the foul line. For Butler, Avery Sheets tossed in 14 points and Bruce Horan scored 11 points.
What is most amazing is that Detroit dominated the boards decisively, 36 to 23 and 20 of those were offensive rebounds. With numbers like that, you would have thought they would have won.
So why did they lose?
It comes down to Butler's tough defense that kept the Titans from putting the ball in the basket and their dead-on accurate foul shooting. Detroit took 16 more shots than Butler at 59-44, but Butler made more three-pointers.
Here are the numbers: Butler shot 45 percent from the field, 40 percent from three point land and an impressive 80 percent from the foul line. Detroit was held to 37.3 percent from the field including 33.3 from three point land and they managed only 60 percent from the foul line. Also, the Bulldogs made 16 foul shots versus three for Detroit.
For Detroit, Jon Goode scored 17 points and Chuck Bailey put in 12 points.
Next up: for Detroit, they play UWM at home on Wednesday, and Butler plays at Loyola on Thursday.
