DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs opened Horizon League play with an impressive 75-56 victory over the UIC Flames at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Bruce Horan's three-pointer at the 18:28 mark gave Butler the lead for good at 5-4. The Bulldogs used a 11-0 run to take an 18-6 lead, but the Flames answered with an 11-3 run of their own to pull within four at 21-17 with 7:50 left in the half. Butler answered with an 11-2 spurt to make it 32-19, and took at 36-27 halftime lead. The Bulldogs led by double digits for most of the second half, leading by as many as 23 at 69-46 on a Brandon Polk basket with 5:18 left, and cruised to a 75-56 win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Polk. BP was 9-of-12 from the field to lead all scorers with 21 points.

A. J. Graves had 17 points and three assists. Brandon Crone finished with 13 points and five rebounds. Horan nailed four three-pointers for 12 points. Brian Ligon had six points and four rebounds off the bench prior to fouling out, while fellow reserve Julian Betko added four points. Avery Sheets had two points and six assists. UIC was led by Othyus Jeffers' 14 points.

Head coach Todd Lickliter was impressed with Sheets' game. "I thought [he] was just terrific handling the ball," Lickliter said. "He was really a true point guard today in every sense of the word. I was really pleased with the way he handled the team and ran the show, and then guys played off of him." The Bulldogs shot 58% for the game, including 44% from three-point range, and held UIC to 44% and 25%, respectively. Butler forced 12 turnovers while committing just six. The Flames won the rebounding battle 27-22 and enjoyed a 16-9 advantage in second chance points, but that was nowhere near enough to make a difference this afternoon. A great way to start Horizon League play for the Bulldogs.

Butler hits the road for four of its next five games. Up first is a trip to Wisconsin-Milwaukee to face the preseason HL favorites. Game time is Saturday, January 7, at 8:00 p.m. EST.
