DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

It took an overtime period, but the Butler Bulldogs were finally able to overcome the visiting Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix, 72-66. Butler's largest lead of the first half was at 8-3 at the 16:46 mark. From there the game went back and forth, with six lead changes and no team leading by more than four. Butler got a pair of free throws from Avery Sheets at the end of the half to take a 28-26 halftime lead. The second half was more of the same. The lead changed hands eight times and there were six ties. Butler was trailing 46-43 with 8:28 left in regulation when a 13-2 Bulldog run, kicked off by a four-point play from Bruce Horan, gave them a 56-48 lead with 5:37 to go and seemed to put them in control. UWGB wasn't ready to call it a night, however, and reeled off nine unanswered points to take a 57-56 lead with 3:10 left. Butler and UWGB exchanged baskets, then a Brandon Polk free throw with 1:25 tied the score at 59 with 1:25 remaining. The Bulldogs rebounded a missed jumper by Ryan Evanochko, putting themselves in position to take the final shot and go for the win. They actually wound up with three final shots, thanks to a pair of offensive rebounds, but were unable to convert and the game headed to overtime knotted at 59.

The two teams battled to a 64-64 tie with at the 1:16 mark in overtime. Horan gave Butler the lead for good with a three-pointer with 0:45 left. A Polk free throw made it a two-possession game at 68-64. Evanochko hit a layup with 0:17 remaining, but the Phoenix would not score again. Graves and Brandon Crone each made two free throws to ice a 72-66 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Horan. He hit three of the game's most important shots. The aforementioned four-point play turned a three-point deficit into a one-point lead in the span of a single possession; his first three-pointer in overtime seemed to swing momentum to Butler, and his second overtime triple put the Bulldogs in control. He finished with 19 points on six three-pointers to go with three rebounds.

Polk led all scorers with 22 points along with three rebounds, three assists, and three blocks. Graves added 19 points. Crone finished with six points, six rebounds, and six assists. Sheets had six points, three rebounds, and three assists. Julian Betko did not score, but played solid defense in his 22 minutes of play, finishing with three steals. UWGB was led by Ryan Tillema's 20 points.

UWGB's defense really took Butler's offense out of its rhythm. The spacing and timing of the Bulldogs' offensive sets was often disrupted by the Phoenix' agressive defense. Still, Butler managed 16 assists on 23 field goals. Graves got things going in the first half, scoring 13 of his points in the opening frame, while Horan and Polk shouldered the bulk of the scoring after halftime, racking up 16 points each in the second half and overtime--accounting for 32 of Butler's 44 points. Butler's defense forced 18 turnovers, but only converted them into 15 points (the Phoenix had just seven points off eight Butler miscues). Conversely, UWGB outrebounded Butler 38-22, but only held a 9-4 advantage in second chance points.

Butler welcomes the league-leading Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers to Hinkle Fieldhouse for a battle between the two teams currently atop the HL standings. Game time is Saturday, February 4, at 2:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
