DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

For the second straight game, Butler took a Horizon League foe from Wisconsin to overtime, and for the second straight game they came out with a win, edging the league-leading Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers 63-60 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Sporting retro uniforms in celebration of the University's sesquicentennial, the Bulldogs got things started with a Brandon Polk dunk. UWM immediately answered with a Jason McCoy layup, setting the tone for a game which would see 13 ties and 19 lead changes before it was all said and done. The largest lead held by either team was a five-point Butler advantage at 19-14 with 6:00 left in the first half, the result of a 7-0 run by the Bulldogs. The Panthers answered with a 7-0 run of their own to regain the lead. Butler held a 24-23 advantage at halftime on a Polk layup. The second half was even more back-and-forth. Neither team led by more than three points. It was tied 52-52 with 1:28 remaining in regulation. Brandon Crone split a pair of free throws to give Butler a 53-52 lead with 0:55 left, but Joah Tucker made both of his foul shots at the other end to put UWM back on top, 54-53. A. J. Graves missed a shot with 0:21 to go, and the Bulldogs were unable to foul before UWM got the ball up the court to McCoy for a dunk to give the Panthers a 56-53 lead with just 0:10 showing on the clock. Unfazed, Butler brought the ball up the court, and Avery Sheets found Graves in the corner, who nailed a step-back three-pointer to tie the game at 56 and force overtime.

Neither team scored in overtime until Tucker's layup with 2:50 to go put UWM up 58-56. Graves answered with a bucket of his own to knot the game at 58 apiece. Following a missed shot by Adrian Tigert, Crone pulled down the rebound and, after a timeout, converted a conventional three-point play to put the Bulldogs in the lead for good, 61-58. UWM's Chris Hill drew a foul and missed the front end of a one-and-one, but Crone was called for a foul on the rebound, sending Tucker to the line. He sank both free throws to make it 61-60 with 0:51 left. Sheets missed a jumper, setting up the game's turning point. UWM got the ball down to Tucker in the post, but he was tied up for a jump ball with the possession arrow pointing Butler's way. UWM fouled Polk, who calmly sank both free throws to set the final margin. Hill lost the ball as time expired, and Butler came away with a hard-fought 63-60 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Tough call here, because so many players played a role in the victory. I'll choose Graves, since without his three-pointer there'd have been no win. He finished with 13 points.

Polk led Butler with 18 points, five rebounds, and three blocks. Crone added 15 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Bruce Horan finished with nine points. Sheets had four points, six assists, three steals, and no turnovers in 40 minutes. Brian Ligon added four points off the bench. UWM was led by Tucker's 26 points and 10 rebounds.

The Star's David Woods pointed out an amazing stat: 50 of UWM's points were in the paint, the other 10 came at the free throw line. They were 0-of-13 from three-point range, and didn't make a shot outside the lane. Butler managed 7-of-18 from behind the arc (39%), and committed just five turnovers compared to 12 by the Panthers. UWM outrebounded Butler 47-23, including 18 offensive rebounds yielding a 21-5 advantage in second-chance points. Another classic Butler/Milwaukee battle, and a great win to cap a week of celebration at Butler.

The Bulldogs close out their three-game homestand when they host the Cleveland State Vikings. Game time is Wednesday, February 8, at 7:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
