DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament with an 87-71 win over the Butler Bulldogs in the Horizon League Tournament Championship at US Cellular Arena in Milwaukee, WI. Butler's biggest lead of the game came early, a 7-2 lead at the 18:07 mark. UWM scored six straight points to take the lead, and the bulk of the first half was a back-and-forth affair from that point. The turning point came after a pair of Brandon Polk free throws gave Butler its last lead of the game at 26-25 with 5:30 left in the opening frame. The Panthers went on a decisive 11-0 run over the next three minutes to take the lead for good. UWM led 40-32 at halftime. The Panthers' Joah Tucker picked up his fourth foul 40 seconds into the second half, but the Bulldogs were unable to capitalize. They got the deficit down to seven twice: 48-41 on a Polk dunk with 15:19 to go and 54-47 on a three-pointer by A. J. Graves with 11:20 remaining. In between those two moments, Polk picked up his fourth foul. Not coincidentally, Butler would not hit another two-point basket until an Avery Sheets layup with 2:51 to go. Over that span, UWM expanded its lead to as many as 19 at 81-62 with 3:17 left, and cruised to an 87-71 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Polk. BP led all scorers with 27 points to go with five rebounds.

Sheets finished with 20 points, five assists, and four rebounds. Brandon Crone added 14 points and six rebounds. Brian Ligon had four points and four rebounds off the bench. Graves and Bruce Horan scored three points each, struggling through a combined 2-of-14 shooting night. UWM was led by Boo Davis' 18 points.

The defense simply wasn't there tonight. UWM continually broke down Butler's defense for easy baskets. And if help rotated over, it seemed that more often than not, the UWM player whose defender left him to help would swoop in for an offensive rebound and/or a dunk. UWM outrebounded Butler 40-24 and committed fewer turnovers (nine to the Bulldogs' 10).

Congratulations to the Panthers, and best of luck in the Big Dance.

The Bulldogs now play the waiting game to see if they merit an invitation to the NIT. The NIT field is supposed to be announced Sunday, March 12, presumably after the announcement of the NCAA Tournament field. Stay tuned...

Mike in Milwaukee:
My first Milwaukee Panthers game and I have to say it was beyond what I
expected. The crowd was 100x better (and louder) than it is at Bucks games. The
Horizon League has to be pleased to have teams like Butler and UW-Milwaukee
representing it so well on national television.
