DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs played their third overtime contest in four games, but this time found themselves on the losing end, dropping a double-overtime heartbreaker to the Wright State Raiders, 86-83, at the Nutter Center. Butler jumped out to a 9-2 lead early, and held their biggest lead of the game at 16-8 at the 14:43 mark of the first half. WSU used an 8-0 run to tie the game, and the remainder of the first half was back-and-forth, with the Bulldogs taking a 29-27 lead at the half. The second half was more of the same. Neither team had a lead larger than four points until a pair of DaShaun Wood free throws gave WSU a 52-46 advantage with 5:54 left in regulation, and two free throws by Jordan Pleiman made it 54-48 at the 4:07 mark. Butler battled back to tie the game twice, and led briefly at 60-58 with under a minute left. But Pleiman scored four straight points to put the Raiders on top 62-60 with 0:19 remaining. Avery Sheets missed a three-pointer, but Brandon Polk got the offensive rebound and was fouled. Polk calmly sank both free throws, and the game headed to overtime.

A Sheets three-pointer gave the Bulldogs a 71-68 lead with 1:55 left in the first overtime. A. J. Graves made a steal, but the Dawgs missed two opportunities to score. Wood made a pair of free throws to make it 71-70, then Jaron Taylor stole the ball and fed Wood for a layup to put WSU on top 72-71 with 0:23 to go. Bruce Horan missed a jumper and Butler was forced to foul. Drew Burleson split a pair of free throws, then Sheets drove the lane and dropped a perfect pass to Polk, who dunked it home and sent the game to a second overtime, tied at 73.

Polk found Drew Streicher for an easy layup with 3:16 left to give Butler an 80-77 lead. WSU then took command with an 8-0 run. A Horan three-pointer made it 85-83 with 8 seconds left. Wood made one of two free throws, setting up a potential game-tying shot, but Graves' running three-pointer was no good and the Raiders came away with an 86-83 victory.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME: Polk and Graves. The duo formed a potent inside-out combination. Polk was 8-of-9 from the field for 21 points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists. Graves had four three-pointers en route to a team-high 24 points.

Brandon Crone finished with 12 points and three rebounds. Sheets added 11 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Horan had nine points, three rebounds, and three assists. Streicher finished with four points, while Brian Ligon added two points and four rebounds. WSU was led by Wood'a game-high 33 points.

The Raiders pulled down some key offensive rebounds which really made the difference. They got back-to-back offensive boards which led to a conventional three-point play with under 30 seconds left in regulation, wiping out a two-point Butler lead. Back-to-back offensive rebounds with just over three minutes to go in the first OT netted a pair of free throws, cutting a three-point Butler lead to one. And an offensive rebound with 0:41 left in the second OT led to free throws which pushed a one-point WSU lead out to three. Butler was only outscored 19-15 in second chance points, but the timing for many of those 19 points was quite innopportune for the Bulldogs. WSU outrebounded Butler 43-27 and outscored the Bulldogs 14-13 in points off turnovers.

The road does not get any easier for the Dawgs, as they must quickly shake off this loss and travel to Wisconsin-Green Bay to face the Phoenix. Game time is Monday, February 13, at 8:00 p.m. EST.
