DAVE'S CIGARBOY'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

WSU/Butler
By Bill Kintner

Indianapolis – Butler coach Todd Lickliter's team had been there before. Twice last year the Bulldogs had a double digit lead over the Wright State (8-10, 4-4 HL) late in the second half, only to see the Raiders come charging back to win.

This time the Bulldogs wrote a new ending to the story. They stopped the Raiders when they cut Butler's lead to six points at the one minute mark and held on to win, 70-62

At the half, Butler (11-8, 4-3 HL) had a 12 point lead over the Raiders. They gradually worked the lead out to 16 points at the 2:46 mark in the second half when Avery Sheets made a jump shot near the top of the key for two points, then the Raiders went to work.

Burleson made a couple of foul shots, then put in another two on a jump shot, then a lay-up by DeShaun Wood, then a made free throw when he was fouled and the Raiders had it down to nine points with 1:36 left. A 3-pointer by Burleson got it down to that six point Butler lead.

From that point on, it was the calm, collected, Butler team, that kept the Raiders from getting off many good shots and also made their free throws down the stretch to clinch the victory.

"I thought we remained poised," explained Lickliter. "Wright State really came at us hard. They are really good at being opportunistic and making quick runs.

"We never lost our poise, we kept the ball movement and it really came down to keeping our composure," continued Lickliter.

Wright State coach Paul Biancardi thought that Butler's 14 points off of turnovers was a key in his team's loss and the fact that Butler played a very good game.

"I just think that Butler played very well," said Biancardi. "But then we battled back hard and outscored them in the second half. I thought we played with a lot more energy and toughness. But you can't spot somebody 20 points on their home court."

Burleson thought that the Raiders let the crowd of 6,654 get to them. "They had a good crowd here today," Burleson said. "A few of their guys came out and hit some shots right away and I think we got a little riled by the crowd."

The Raiders were led by Burleson with 18 points and seven rebounds, and Jordan Pleiman, who also score 18 points and pulled down eight rebounds.

Butler shot 47.5 (23-48) percent for the game and the Raiders shot 48.8 percent (21-43). Butler out shot the Raiders from 3-point land, 40 percent (6-15) to 22.2 percent (2-9). On free throws, Wright State shot 18 of 25 for 72 percent and the Bulldogs were 18-26 for 69.2 percent.

Butler was led in scoring by Brandon Polk with 19 points. A. J. Graves put in 17 points and Brandon Crone scored 13 points for the Bulldogs.

During the first half, Butler jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first three minutes on a 3 pointer by Bruce Horan, a lay up by Polk and a three by Graves. The Butler lead got up to 20 points at the 9:27 mark on a lay up by Polk. The Raiders fought back to get the lead down to 12 points at the half, 34-22.

Former Wright State Raider Coach Ed Schilling was in attendance with two of his kids and his father, former Butler great Big Ed Schilling.

Thanks to CigarBoy for his report!

The Bulldogs won't have much time to enjoy the victory, as they travel to UIC to face the Flames. Game time is Monday, Janury 30, at 8:00 p.m. EST.
