DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs saw a 21-point second half lead get cut to two, but held on to defeat the Youngstown State Penguins 72-64 on Senior Night at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Butler broke open a 16-15 game with a 15-0 run, with YSU ending the drought on a Derrick Harris three-pointer to make the score 31-18 at halftime. The Bulldogs led by 21 at 47-26 with 15:19 to go, but that's when the Penguins began to steadily close the gap. A 21-7 run made it 54-47 with 8:22 to go and got the deficit under double figures, where it remained for the rest of the game. Butler led 58-51 when the Penguins scored five unanswered points to make it 58-56 with 5:00 left. Bruce Horan then nailed a three-pointer, but Quin Humphrey answered with one of his own to pull YSU within two again at 61-59. A three-pointer from A. J. Graves gave the Bulldogs a little breathing room, and the Dawgs made 8-of-10 free throws down the stretch to seal a 72-64 victory.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME: The seniors. Brandon Polk led the Bulldogs with 24 points along with four rebounds, four assists, and three blocked shots. Avery Sheets added 11 points, five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Horan finished with nine points.

Brandon Crone continued to emerge from his recent shooting slump, finishing 4-of-7 overall and 2-of-3 from three-point range for 14 points to go with five rebounds. Graves had 12 points, while Julian Betko had two points and three assists off the bench. Brian Ligon did not score, but led the Bulldogs with six rebounds. YSU was led by Humphrey's game-high double-double of 29 points and 15 rebounds.

Humprhey keyed YSU's comeback, scoring 24 of his 29 points in the second half. But the Bulldogs were able to withstand the run, and never lost the lead or their composure. Polk turned in yet another solid all-around performance. Butler forced 16 turnovers, converting them into 20 points. YSU outrebounded the Bulldogs 34-25, but held just a 15-12 advantage in second chance points. Butler got to the foul line 24 times but shot only 58%. On the plus side, the Bulldogs had 15 assists on 24 field goals and shot 44% from three-point range.

The Bulldogs travel to Detroit to face the Titans in the regular season finale. Butler can clinch the top seed and host the Horizon League tournament with a win and a win by either YSU, UIC, or UWGB on Saturday. Game time is Saturday, February 25, at 4:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
