DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs held off a determined effort from the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles, earning a hard-fought 79-65 victory. Butler used a 14-0 run spanning five minutes in the first half to take a 31-14 lead at the 5:00 mark of the opening frame. FGCU chipped the Bulldogs' lead down to nine before a late Brandon Crone layup gave Butler a 39-28 halftime lead. The Bulldogs scored the first six points of the second half, but the Eagles answered with a 10-2 run to make it 47-38 with 11:12 remaining. Butler pushed its lead back to 18 on two occasions, the latter at 66-48 with 4:33 left. A 14-5 FGCU run, keyed by four three-pointers, pulled the Eagles to within nine at 71-62 at the 1:54 mark, but they would get no closer. Mike Green made all six free throws down the stretch and Graves hit both of his to seal a 79-65 win.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME: Green and A. J. Graves. Green led all scorers with 24 points along with six rebounds, and was 14-of-16 at the foul line. Graves added 22 points and made four steals.

Pete Campbell had 12 points and three rebounds. Crone added 11 points and eight rebounds. Willie Veasley played a career-high 29 minutes and scored 10 points, also a new career best. He dished out three assists and became the first Bulldog not named Drew Streicher to dunk in a game this season, throwing down a second half jam to bring those that made the trip to Hinkle through the snow storm to their feet. FGCU was led by Beau Bauer's 17 points.

The Eagles made sure that nothing would come easy for the Bulldogs, and refused to give up at any point in the game. Their rebounding was as good as advertised, holding a 36-27 advantage on the glass, including 17 offensive boards. Despite those numbers, Butler did outscore FGCU in second chance points, 15-10. Butler's defense forced 18 turnovers, leading to a 21-6 advantage in points off turnovers, and held FGCU to 40% shooting.

Butler's two-game homestand comes to an end when the Southern Illinois Salukis come to Hinkle as part of ESPNU's BracketBusters. Game time is Saturday, February 17, at 4:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised live on ESPN2. Hope to see you there.
