MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs gave the Florida Gators all they could handle for 37 minutes, but the defending national champions proved to be too much as they ended Butler's season with a 65-57 victory in the NCAA Tournament's Midwest Regional Semifinal at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, MO. Florida held an early 6-4 lead before a 10-0 Butler run, keyed entirely by 10 straight points from Brandon Crone, put the Bulldogs on top 14-6 at the 11:42 mark of the first half. Butler pushed its lead to as many as nine point four different times, the last of which came at 27-18 with 6:19 to go in the half. Drew Streicher hit a pair of free throws with just over five minutes left in the opening frame, representing Butler's final points before halftime. The Gators closed the half on a 13-0 run to take a 35-29 lead into the locker room. Florida held the Bulldogs without a field goal from the 8:42 mark of the first half until the 17:56 mark of the second half, when Brian Ligon's layup ended both the scoring and field goal drought for Butler. It also keyed a 12-2 Butler run, giving the Bulldogs a 41-37 lead with 14:29 to go. Florida eventually regained a 52-48 advantage at the 6:53 mark. The Bulldogs responded with a 6-1 spurt to pull ahead 54-53 with 3:33 left. It would prove to be their final lead of the game as the Gators scored the game's next six points to take control. Florida was a perfect 6-of-6 at the foul line in the game's final minute to seal a 65-57 victory.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME: Crone and Campbell. Crone's personal 10-0 run kick-started the Bulldogs' offense in the first half. He would not score again, but his 10 points gave him 997 for his career. He also pulled down four rebounds. Campbell had 14 points off the bench, including four three-pointers.

Mike Green had 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals. A. J. Graves had 11 points, all in the second half, along with three rebounds. Streicher added six points and three rebounds off the bench. Ligon and Julian Betko finished with two points each. Florida was led by Taurean Green's game-high 17 points.

The Gators, who were shooting 69% from the foul line on the season, were 23-of-28 (82%) at the line tonight. Despite the size disadvantage, Butler was only outrebounded 27-25 and held Florida to just four second chance points, and actually outscored the Gators 22-14 in the paint. The Bulldogs also held a 20-2 advantage in bench points. But scoring droughts at the end of each half proved costly, and the Gators iced the game at the free throw line.

It's been an incredible season. After losing the HL Player of the Year and a pair of 1,000-point scorers, not many Butler fans could have envisioned a 29-win season, a preseason NIT championship, being nationally ranked for almost the entire season, a regular season HL co-championship, an at-large bid as a 5 seed, and a Sweet Sixteen run in the Big Dance. To Brandon, Brian and Marcus: thank you all so much for all the memories. Your leadership will be greatly missed. To the returning players and newcomers: work hard this offseason and prepare for what will hopefully be another memorable season next year. Thanks to the players, coaches, and support staff for a season that Butler fans won't soon forget. It's been quite a ride, and thanks for bringing us along for it.
