DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs never trailed en route to the NIT Season Tip-off Championship, defeated the Gonzaga Bulldogs 79-71 at Madison Square Garden in New York. A steal and layup from A. J. Graves gave Butler a lead it would not relinquish at 7-5 at the 15:36 mark. BU led by as many as 17 in the opening frame, and held a 43-29 advantage at halftime. Julian Betko's jumper to beat the shot clock at the 8:00 mark in the second half gave Butler a 62-45 lead. It was signficant in that it was BU's final field goal of the game. Butler shot 17-of-19 at the free throw line over the final eight minutes, holding off a late Gonzaga run and earning the NIT Season Tip-off title, 79-71.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Graves. The NIT MVP capped an impressive four-game tournament with a game-high 26 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists.

Mike Green had 16 points, seven assists, and four rebounds. Julian Betko added 13 points, six rebounds, and three steals and was rewarded with a spot on the all-tournament team. Brandon Crone finished with nine points and six rebounds. Marcus Nellems also had nine points. Brian Ligon had three points and four rebounds, while Drew Streicher added three points. Gonzaga was led by Derek Raivio's 20 points.

Wow...what an incredible start to the season. Wins over Notre Dame, Indiana, Tennessee and Gonzaga, and an NIT championship to show for it. Congratulations to the team and the coaching staff on their accomplishments!

Butler has little time to celebrate, as the Kent State Golden Flashes invade Hinkle Fieldhouse as the return game to last year's Bracket Buster matchup. Game time is Saturday, November 25, at 7:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
