DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs played from behind for most of the night before finally overcoming the visiting Kent State Golden Flashes 83-80 in double overtime at Hinkle Fieldhouse. KSU never trailed in the first half. Butler tied the game twice, at 5-5 and again at 7-7, but the Flashes held the lead for the rest of the opening frame. Kent State led by as many as six in the half, and held a 25-20 advantage at halftime. The visitors pushed their lead to as many as 8 in the second half, at 38-30 and 40-32. The Bulldogs then began to chip away at KSU's lead. They forced a pair of ties before taking their first lead of the game on a pair of free throws from A. J. Graves to make it 50-48 with 4:17 left in regulation. The game see-sawed back and forth from there. An Omni Smith three-pointer with 19 seconds left gave Kent a 57-55 lead, but Brian Ligon answered with a putback of a Graves miss with seven seconds left to force the first overtime.

Butler jumped out to a 64-60 lead in overtime, but a 7-0 Kent run left the Bulldogs trailing 67-64 with 11 seconds on the clock. But in a sequence quite similar to last year's game against Wisconsin-Milwaukee at Hinkle, Graves buried a three-pointer in front of the Butler bench with six seconds left, and the teams headed to a second overtime period.

A three-pointer from Kent's Chris Singletary gave the Flashes their final lead at 74-73 with 3:10 left. The Bulldogs took the lead for good on a pair of free throws from Graves, followed by a steal and a conventional three-point play by Graves to give Butler a 78-74 lead with 2:13 left. Kent got within one at 81-80 with 16 seconds left, but Graves sealed it with a pair of free throws to give Butler a hard-fought 83-80 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Graves. He led all scorers with 26 points, overcoming a tough shooting night (6-of-23, 26%) with a 12-for-13 effort from the foul line. He also pulled down six rebounds and dished out five assists in 48 minutes.

Mike Green had his second consecutive 16-point effort, going 12-of-14 at the free throw line to go with six rebounds in 50 minutes. Brandon Crone had 15 points before fouling out. Ligon had a career-best 13 points along with five rebounds in a career-high 31 minutes. Marcus Nellems and Drew Streicher had four points each, Julian Betko added three points and three rebounds, and Pete Campbell finished with two points. Kent was led by Haminn Quaintance's 20 points.

I think it's safe to say that this was the kind of game most would expect when these two teams get together. Both are very well-coached and well-prepared, and gave nothing but maximum effort for 50 minutes. As a basketball fan, you couldn't ask for more. The stat I'll point to is that Butler committed just six turnovers in 50 minutes. A team can overcome a tough shooting night with that level of commitment to taking care of the ball, coupled with tough defense.

After a successful yet extremely busy week, the Bulldogs now have a bit of a chance to catch their breath before heading back out on the road. Up next are the Valparaiso Crusaders. Game time is Wednesday, November 29, at 8:00 p.m. EST.

willsfan in Freeport:
The energy level of the bench, especially defensivly was excellent. They kept
the game close when we were having trouble scoring.
