DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs saw their chances of hosting the Horizon League tournament come and go over the span of a couple hours as the Loyola Ramblers snapped a 17-game losing streak at Hinkle Fieldhouse with a 75-71 win. The night started well for Butler, as Wright State lost at Youngstown State. That meant that the Bulldogs could win the HL title outright with a pair of wins at home. The Bulldogs held a lead of five points three different times in the first half, the final time coming at 15-10 at the 12:05 mark. Loyola fought back to tie the game three times, then took the lead for the remainder of the half on a three-pointer by Blake Schilb to make it 22-21 with 8:12 left in the period. The Ramblers then pushed their lead to five points on three occasions, including 38-33 just before halftime. Pete Campbell sank a three-pointer at the buzzer, but after the officials reviewed the shot, it was determined that he did not release the shot in time, and the halftime score stood at 38-33. Loyola scored the first seven points of the second half, holding its biggest lead of the game at 45-33 with 18:07 remaining. Butler fought back to within four points at 46-42 with 15:41 to go, but was held scoreless for the next four-and-a-half minutes of the game. By then, Loyola held a 52-42 lead at the 11:22 mark. Butler went from an A. J. Graves layup with 16:17 left to a Campbell three-pointer at the 10:28 mark without a field goal, managing just two free throws over that span. However, a 19-5 Butler run turned that 10-point deficit into a four-point lead at 61-57 with 6:24 remaining. From there, the teams battled back and forth through eight ties and eight lead changes. Butler led 69-67 when a conventional three-point play from Andy Polka put the Ramblers in the lead to stay at 70-69 with 1:17 left. Butler only managed a Graves layup from that point, and Tracy Robinson's five clutch free throws sealed a 75-71 victory for Loyola.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Graves. A. J. led the Bulldogs with 24 points and pulled down four rebounds.

Mike Green had 23 points and five rebounds. Brandon Crone added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds to go with three assists. Campbell had six points off the bench. Julian Betko finished with five points, while Brian Ligon added a free throw for one point. Loyola was led by Schilb's game-high 28 points.

Loyola dictated the pace of the game and forced the Bulldogs to play catch-up. Butler has now trailed at halftime in all five of its losses. For the game, Loyola shot 53% overall and 42% from the three-point line, and continually attacked the basket in the second half, getting to the free throw line 27 times in the period. After turning the ball over just once in the first half, the Bulldogs committed eight miscues in the second half, several coming at key points in the game.

The Bulldogs wrap up the regular season and try for a share of the regular season HL title when they host the Detroit Titans. Game time is Saturday, February 24, at 2:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
