Brandon Crone hit a huge three to start the overtime period. That represented Butler's only points for the first three minutes of the extra session. Loyola scored the next five points, and would lead 61-59 with 1:31 to go. Brian Ligon hit a pair of big free throws to tie the game at 61, then A. J. Graves made a steal and converted two free throws to put Butler on top 63-61. Following a timeout, Butler stole the inbound pass and Graves hit two more free throws to give the Bulldogs a four point lead with 0:28 left. Blake Schilb buried a tough three-pointer to cut it to one at 65-64 at the 0:21 mark. Following two more Graves free throws, Majak Kou tipped in a missed Schilb three-pointer to make it 67-66. Graves then lost the ball out of bounds in front the Loyola bench, giving the Ramblers a chance for the win. Schilb missed a late jumper, but the rebound went out of bounds to Loyola with just over a second remaining. Graves stole the inbounds pass and time expired, with Butler holding on for the 67-66 win.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Ligon. His stats won't jump out at you, but his two free throws to tie the game in overtime were big, as was his defense down the stretch on Schilb. He finished with four points and four rebounds.
Campbell led the Bulldogs with 18 points. Crone had another double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Graves went 0-for-9 from the field, but made all 12 of his free throws for 12 points along with four assists and four steals. Mike Green added nine points, five assists, and three rebounds. Julian Betko had five points and a pair of steals. Streicher finished with two points. Schilb led all scorers with 29 points along with five rebounds.
You had to expect a hard-fought game that would go down to the wire, and that was certainly the case. Both teams battled to the very end, and the outcome wasn't decided until the final buzzer in overtime. Butler was a stellar 95% (19-of-20) from the foul line, dished 13 assists on 20 field goals, and made seven steals. That helped the Bulldogs overcome a 41% shooting night and being outrebounded 33-26.
Butler will face the host Wright State Raiders in the Horizon League Tournament Championship. The top 2 seeds will face off Tuesday, March 6, at 9:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised live on ESPN.
