MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs advance to the Sweet Sixteen for the second time in the past five seasons with a 62-59 victory over Maryland in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at HSBC Arena in Buffalo, NY. Maryland jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. It was a back-and-forth affair from there, with several ties and lead changes. The key stretch of the first half for the Bulldogs came with just over seven minutes to go. Butler trailed 19-15 when a Brandon Crone three-pointer kicked off a 13-0 Bulldog run. After a Terrapin free throw, Pete Campbell gave Butler its biggest lead of the game at 31-20 with 1:42 left in the opening frame. Maryland scored the final five points of the half to cut the Butler advantage to 31-25 at halftime. Maryland quickly erased its deficit thanks in large part to three straight three-pointers from Mike Jones which tied the game at 39 apiece with 14:43 remaining. While the Terrapins were able to tie the score three more times, they never regained the lead. The final tie came at 56-56 with 3:40 left. A Crone jumper gave Butler some breathing room, and A. J. Graves buried a big three-pointer on a possession extended by a Drew Streicher offensive rebound to put the Bulldogs on top 61-56 with 2:11 to go. A Jones layup and subesquent free throw from D. J. Strawberry pulled Maryland within two at 61-59 with just over a minute left. Ekene Ibekwe stole an inbounds pass, but Crone drew a charging foul on Strawberry to give the Bulldogs possession. Julian Betko missed a three-pointer at the top of the key, but Mike Green snagged the offensive rebound and was immediately fouled. Green hit the first foul shot but missed the second, giving the Terps one final chance with 3.6 seconds left. As Maryland tried to advance for a final shot, Crone tapped the ball away from behind and dove out of bounds in an attempt to save the ball. After reviewing the monitors, the officials determined there should have been 0.6 seconds on the clock. Maryland inbounded to Jones, but he bobbled the pass as time expired, and the Bulldogs moved on to the Sweet Sixteen in St. Louis with a 62-59 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Crone. The senior forward did a little bit of everything: clutch shooting, solid defense, great passing. He finished with 13 points, four steals, and four assists.

Graves once again led Butler in scoring with 19 points. Campbell finished with three triples for nine points. Green continues to stuff the stat sheet with eight points, eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Betko had seven points, while Streicher added six. Maryland was led by Jones' 21 points.

Butler shot 12-of-26 from three-point range and forced 17 turnovers leading to 20 points off turnovers. Those were the two biggest keys from the stat sheet. They also maintained their composure and never buckled down the stretch. Crone and Graves hit some big three-pointers, Green was a master at running the offense, and the entire team played great defense. Another big win in a season that's had plenty of them, and another trip to the Sweet Sixteen.

The Bulldogs await the winner of Sunday's Purdue/Florida game. Butler's next game will take place Friday, March 23 at a time yet to be determined. The game will be televised live on CBS and available for free online at NCAASports.com.
