DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS
The Butler Bulldogs opened the 2006-07 season with a 73-40 exhibition victory over the Mighty Oaks of Oakland City University. OCU outshot Butler 38% to 31% in the first half, but the Bulldogs held a 34-21 lead thanks in large part to a 10-0 advantage in points off turnovers. Butler forced 14 Oakland City miscues in the opening frame. The Bulldogs held OCU to just one field goal over the first 17:40 of the second half to take control. In fact, the Mighty Oaks managed only three field goals after halftime, giving them a total of just nine made baskets for the game. With Butler's defense playing strong, the offense warmed up a bit, shooting 41% in the second half. Butler led by as many as 38 before a 5-0 spurt from the visitors set the final margin at 33, 73-40.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Willie Veasley. The freshman provided a nice spark off the bench with eight points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Transfer Mike Green led all scorers with 13 points along with three assists. A. J. Graves was Butler's other double-figure scorer with 11 points and three steals. Brandon Crone nearly had a double-double, finishing with nine points and nine rebounds. Transfer Pete Campbell had nine points and four rebounds. Julian Betko had eight points, while Brian Ligon added seven points and five rebounds. Marcus Nellems had three points and five rebounds. Drew Streicher and Elliot Engelmann each finished with two points. Ben Slaton had one point. Freshman walk-on Nick Rodgers played but did not score. OCU was led by Eric Sanders' 10 points.
Butler's shooting obviously left much to be desired, but the defense and rebounding were more than enough to carry them tonight. Butler held OCU to 28% shooting and outrebounded the Mighty Oaks 42-21, including 21 offensive rebounds leading to 16 second chance points.

The regular season kicks off Friday when Butler travels to New Orleans to face the Tulane Green Wave. Game time is Friday, November 10, at 9:30 p.m. Eastern.
