MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs avoided the dreaded 5 seed vs. 12 seed jinx with a decisive 17-0 second half run, defeating the Old Dominion Monarchs 57-46 at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, NY, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The first half was every bit the offensive struggle the 20-19 halftime score would indicate. Butler jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. ODU eventually pulled ahead 14-10 with 7:53 left in the half. The Bulldogs regained a 19-16 lead, but the Monarchs scored the final four points of the half to lead by one at the break. ODU's Valdas Vasylius made a three-pointer with 12:23 left to give the Monarchs a 32-29 lead. That represented ODU's only points for the next seven minutes of game time. Butler hit five straight three-pointers--one from A. J. Graves, three in a row from Pete Campbell, and one from Mike Green--plus a Green layup for a 17-0 run to put the Bulldogs in front 46-32 with 6:20 to go. A Gerald Lee layup ended the Monarchs' scoring drought. They got as close as nine twice down the stretch, but would get no closer. Graves made four straight foul shots in the final minute to seal a 57-46 Bulldog victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Green. The junior point guard finished with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds while dishing out three assists.

Graves led all scorers with 18 points along with four rebounds. Brandon Crone finished with 12 points. Campbell had nine points. Brian Ligon had two points and four rebounds, while fellow senior Marcus Nellems also finished with two points. Drew Streicher did not score, but pulled down six rebounds. ODU was led by Brian Henderson's 11 points.

The 17-0 run was obviously the turning point, but Butler's defense was solid throughout, holding ODU to 33% shooting overall and just 20% from three-point range. Vasylius, ODU's leading scorer, was held to 10 points on 3-of-12 shooting, thanks in large part to the defensive efforts of Ligon and Streicher.

Up next for the Bulldogs are the Maryland Terrapins. Game time is Saturday, March 17, at 3:20 p.m. EDT. The game will be televised live on CBS and available for free online at NCAASports.com.
