DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs bounced back from their first loss of the season with a hard-fought 68-65 win over the Purdue Boilermakers in the Wooden Tradition at Conseco Fieldhouse. After Purdue jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, the two teams battled to a pair of ties, at 11-11 and again at 16-16. An 8-0 Butler run put the Bulldogs up 24-16 with 8:21 left in the first half, but Purdue answered 13-4 run of its own to take a brief one-point lead at 28-27 with 3:26 on the clock. Butler led 35-33 at halftime. The second half basically consisted of Butler pulling away to a two or three possession lead followed by Purdue either tying the game or taking a one point lead. Purdue held a 39-38 lead; Butler jumped out to a 46-39 advantage. Purdue tied it at 46-46; Butler regained a 55-51 lead. Purdue evened the score at 57 apiece; Butler pulled back out to a 63-59 lead. A 5-0 run put the Boilers on top 64-63 with 2:05 to go. A steal by Purdue's Keaton Grant gave the Boilers a chance to run some clock and add to their lead, but Drew Streicher blocked Chris Kramer's shot and grabbed the rebound with just over a minute remaining. Brandon Crone then converted a conventional three-point play to give Butler a lead it would not relinquish at 66-64 with 59 seconds left. Carl Landry missed a put-back attempt of a Gordon Watt missed jumper, and Streicher pulled down the rebound, forcing Purdue to eventually foul Mike Green. Green made one of two free throws, giving Butler a 67-64 lead with 27 seconds to go. Kramer drew a foul at the other end and split his two free throw attempts, missing the second. Tarrance Crump got the rebound, but Crone stripped the ball and the Boilers were again forced to foul. Green made one of two free throws, giving Purdue one final chance to tie the game, but Crump's three-pointer bounced away and the Bulldogs earned a 68-65 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: A. J. Graves. Graves showed no lingering affects of the poked eye he suffered at Indiana State, finishing with a game-high 25 points. He was 8-of-12 overall, 4-for-7 from three-point range, and a perfect 5-of-5 from the foul line, and added three steals.

Green finished with 18 points and four assists. Crone added eight points, three rebounds, and five assists. Willie Veasley had a strong showing off the bench, finishing with career-highs of 28 minutes, seven points, and nine rebounds. Streicher had four points and three rebounds. Brian Ligon finished with three points and three rebounds, while Julian Betko added three points. Purdue was led by Watt's 20 points and nine rebounds.

Butler's defense on Landry, particularly by Ligon and Streicher, was phenomenal. The three-time Big Ten Player of the Week was held to just five shot attempts, and his 12 points were eight under his average. Overall, Butler's defense converted 19 Boilermaker turnovers into 23 points. That, combined with 80% foul shooting, overcame a 39% shooting night and a 39-27 rebounding deficit for the Bulldogs. Just a tremendous basketball game, and a great win for Butler.

Butler returns to Hinkle Fieldhouse for a game against the Evansville Purple Aces. Game time is Friday, December 22, at 7:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
