DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs used a 13-0 run in the first half to take control and defeat the South Dakota State Jackrabbits 62-47 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. SDSU held a 6-5 lead at the 14:15 mark of the first half when the Bulldogs scored 13 unanswered points to take an 18-6 advantage with 7:27 left in the half. Butler pushed its lead to 20 twice in the opening frame, and held a 33-14 halftime lead. The Bulldogs scored the first six points of the second half and led by as many as 26. SDSU finally started to get untracked offensively, but the deficit was far too big for the visitors as the Bulldogs won, 62-47.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME: Marcus Nellems and Pete Campbell. With leading scorer A. J. Graves missing the game following surgery to remove all four wisdom teeth on Thursday, the Bulldogs were in need of some additional offensive firepower, and the two Fort Wayne products delivered. Nellems connected on all three of his three-point attempt for nine first half points, while Campbell added two of his own plus another jumper for eight points. Nellems did not score in the second half, but Campbell added another triple to finish with 11 points.

Brandon Crone had 14 points and six rebounds. Mike Green added nine points, five rebounds, and four assists. Drew Streicher, earning the start in Graves' absence, responded with seven points. Julian Betko finished with five points, five rebounds, and three assists. Willie Veasley added four points and four rebounds. Ben Slaton made a pair of free throws for two points, while Brian Ligon finished with one point. SDSU was led by Kai Williams' 12 points.

Butler appeared to lose some intensity in the second half, but did enough in the first half to keep the game from ever being in question. It was good to see so many Bulldogs get playing time today, as eight players logged at least 16 minutes. Butler eclipsed the 50% mark from the floor for only the third time this season, and the 43.5% shooting from three-point range was second only to the 44.4% effort from behind the arc at Tulane. A good way to kick off the homestand, and to bounce back from a disappointing loss Wednesday.

Next up on the homestand are the Youngstown State Penguins. Game time is Wednesday, January 17, at 7:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
