PLAYER OF THE GAME: Pete Campbell. Pete scored 14 of his 17 points in the second half, including back-to-back three-pointers to cut a nine-point deficit down to three with just under eight minutes to go. He was 5-of-9 for the game from three-point range; the rest of the team was 4-of-14.
Mike Green led the Bulldogs with 18 points and seven rebounds. Brandon Crone added 13 points and four rebounds. Brian Ligon finished with six points. A. J. Graves struggled through a 1-of-8 shooting night for five points, but dished out four assists. Willie Veasley had five points, including a first-half dunk which got Hinkle rocking. SIU was led by Tatum's game-high 20 points along with four assists.
I thought Crone summed it up best after the game when he noted, "We didn't make the plays when it came down to it, and they did." Neither team shot the ball particularly well--SIU finished at 45%, Butler at 41%. Butler forced 11 SIU turnovers while committing just six, leading to a 17-3 advantage in points off turnovers. But the Salukis made it to the free throw line 37 times for the game, including 29 in the second half, and outscored Butler 27-19 at the charity stripe. "Both teams probably played well enough to beat a lot of teams today, " said Butler head coach Todd Lickliter. "We just didn't play well enough to beat Southern Illinois."
The Bulldogs must now regroup quickly and hit the road to kick off a key three-game Horizon League slate over the final week of the regular season with a trip to Wisconsin-Green Bay to face the Phoenix. Game time is Monday, February 19, at 8:00 p.m. EST.
