DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs began the 2006-07 season in impressive fashion with a dominant 77-37 win over the Tulane Green Wave in New Orleans. Butler got out of the gates quickly and held a 28-10 lead at the eight-minute mark. The Bulldogs kept their lead between 14 and 18 points for the next four minutes, then closed the half with a 10-1 run to take a 43-19 halftime lead. It was more of the same in the second half as the Bulldogs scored the first 13 points of the period, holding Tulane scoreless until a Robinson Louisme free throw at the 13:50 mark ended the scoring drought for the hosts and made it 56-20. Butler was never seriously threatened and cruised to a 40-point victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Marcus Nellems. There were several noteworthy performances, but I'll give the nod to the senior who followed up a rough shooting night in Tuesday's exhibition win over Oakland City with an impressive line of 10 points (a new career-high), eight rebounds and three assists off the bench.

Brandon Crone led all scorers with 18 points, all in the first half, along with four rebounds. A. J. Graves added 13 points and five assists. Mike Green had 10 points and four rebounds in his Butler debut, while fellow transfer Pete Campbell added eight points and four rebounds in his first game as a Bulldog. Brian Ligon finished with eight points and five rebounds, and Julian Betko also had eight points. Walk-on Ben Slaton rounded out the scoring with two points. Drew Streicher pulled down four rebounds off the bench, while freshman Willie Veasley added three boards. Tulane was led by Louisme's eight points.

The stat sheet certainly tells the story. Butler shot 54% overall and 44% from three-point range while holding the Green Wave to 33% and 10%, respectively, outrebounded Tulane 38-24, dished out 20 assists on 30 baskets, and scored 12 points off of 13 Green Wave turnovers while committing just eight miscues themselves. A dominating performance, and a tremendous way to start the season, particularly on the road.

The Bulldogs have little time to celebrate as they head back to Indianapolis to face Notre Dame in the opening round of the NIT Season Tip-Off at Conseco Fieldhouse. Game time is Monday, November 13, at 6:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised live on ESPNU. Hope to see you there.
