DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

For the second straight game, the Butler Bulldogs went into a tough road environment and came away with a win against a quality Horizon League foe, topping the Detroit Titans 68-58 at Calihan Hall. Butler jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and never trailed in the game. The Bulldogs enjoyed their biggest lead on a Pete Campbell three-pointer with 1:30 remaining in the half to make it 38-22. Brandon Cotton hit a pair of free throws to make it 38-24 at halftime. Detroit scored the first nine points of the second half and kept the game close throughout most of the period. The Titans closed to within two at 49-47 with 6:48 remaining, but would get no closer. A pair of Mike Green free throws and a three-pointer from Drew Streicher gave the Bulldogs some breathing room at 54-47. Detroit cut the lead to 56-52 on a conventional three-point play from Ryvon Covile, but A. J. Graves answered with a big three-pointer (his only points of the second half). The Bulldogs pushed their lead to 10 at 64-54 with 1:46 left. Cotton keyed a 4-0 by himself with a jumper and a dunk off of a steal to pull the Titans within six. But Green sank all four of his free throws in the final minute to seal a 68-58 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Green. Mike missed his first free throw attempt, but sank all eleven after that, including all 10 in the second half. He finished with 13 points, six rebounds, and four assists.

Graves finished with 15 points (5-of-11 from three-point range), seven rebounds, and five assists. Brandon Crone added 12 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Pete Campbell had 12 points off the bench. Streicher finished with nine points. Brian Ligon had four points, while Marcus Nellems added three. Cotton led all scorers with 28 points.

Butler had 16 assists on 20 made baskets, and the offense was really clicking in the first half--57% shooting, including 60% from behind the three-point line. Detroit's defense made things tougher in the second half, limiting the Bulldogs to 35% shooting, but a 13-for-14 effort from the foul line helped Butler stay in control. Two big road league wins for the Bulldogs.

Butler returns home for a game against the UIC Flames. Game time is Monday, January 29, at 7:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
