DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The UIC Flames handed the Butler Bulldogs their first loss in Horizon League play with a 73-67 overtime victory at the UIC Pavilion. The Flames used a 9-0 run to jump out to a 9-1 lead. Butler responded with a 6-0 spurt to pull within two at 9-7 with 10:36 in the half, but UIC then went on an 8-0 run to take a 15-7 advantage at the 7:41 mark. The Flames held a 22-15 halftime lead, holding the Bulldogs to 18% shooting overall and 2-of-17 (12%) from three-point range. The second half was by and large the A. J. Graves show, as the junior guard almost single-handedly got the Bulldogs back in the game. He scored 26 points in the second half, including 11 straight at one point, and made a pair of steals that he turned into five points. Still, the Bulldogs found themselves down six points with just over a minute to go. A Graves layup made it 57-53, and following an Othyus Jeffers free throw, the Bulldogs rebounded a pair of their own missed three-pointers before Graves connected on one of his own to pull within two at 58-56 with 0:20 left. Following a timeout, Butler forced a five-second call and Graves hit a pair of free throws to tie the score at 58 with 16 seconds left. Jeffers was whistled for a traveling violation, setting up a chance for Butler to win the game. But Graves' desperation three-pointer was no good, and the game went to overtime.

The back-and-forth action in overtime was incredible. Two Josh Mayo free throws gave UIC a 60-58 advantage. Julian Betko's three-pointer gave Butler its first lead since 1-0 to open the game. Butler was unable to capitalize on a UIC turnover, and Jovan Stefanov made the Bulldogs pay with a three-pointer to make it 63-61. A Brandon Crone layup knotted the score at 63. Mike Green was fouled following a steal and split a pair of free throws to put Butler up by one. Stefanov buried another three, but Graves responded with a triple of his own to give the Bulldogs a 67-66 lead with 0:47 to go. A Mayo three-pointer put the Flames in the lead to stay. Butler was unable to score again, and UIC made all four free throws in the final 15 seconds to seal a 73-67 win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Graves. After scoring just two points in the first half, Graves finished with a career-best 31 points along with four assists and three steals. He made seven three-pointers, one shy of his career-high.

Crone narrowly missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Pete Campbell matched his Butler career-high from Saturday's win over Wright State with another 12-point effort to go with five rebounds. Julian Betko added five points and three assists. Green struggled through a 1-for 13 shooting night, finishing with just four points, but did have eight rebounds and four assists. Drew Streicher had one point before fouling out. UIC was led by Mayo's 19 points.

In an overtime game, the importance of each possession gets magnified. One more made free throw (Butler shot just 53% from the line), one more defensive rebound (UIC had 18 offensive rebounds leading to 22 second chance points), or one less empty possession and the game could have been won in regulation. While Butler's offense struggled in the first half, its defense kept it within striking distance. Unfortunately, when the offense finally got untracked after halftime, there were too many defensive lapses, particularly on the perimeter. Everytime Butler hit a big shot, the Flames responded in kind.

Butler returns to Hinkle Fieldhouse for a three-game homestand. Up first is a non-league matchup with the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. Game time is Saturday, January 13, at 2:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
