DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs held off a determined Illinois-Springfield squad to win their regular season home opener 62-56 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. A back-and-forth opening half led to a 15-15 tie at the 10:29 mark. Butler then went on an 11-3 run to take a 26-18 lead with 3:48 left in the half. The visiting Prairie Stars twice cut the lead to four, but a late Brandon Crone three-pointer gave the Bulldogs a 33-26 halftime cushion. Butler's biggest lead of the game was 11 points, 37-26 early in the second half and again at 44-33 with 9:14 remaining. But UIS battled back with a 13-5 run to make it 49-46 at the 4:19 mark. They again got within three at 51-48 with 2:49 to go, but could get no closer. The Bulldogs kept their lead between five and nine points for the remainder of the contest, earning a hard-fought 62-56 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Drew Streicher. The former walk-on had a career-highs of 15 points and seven rebounds off the bench.

Brandon Crone added finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. A. J. Graves added 10 points. Mike Green had seven points and four steals. Marcus Nellems finished with six points. Julian Betko and Brian Ligon had four points and three rebounds apiece. Willie Veasley finished with two points and three rebounds, while Pete Campbell added two points. UIS was led by Eddie's Smith's game-high 29 points.

I wasn't able to attend, so I can't comment much beyond the box score. Butler turned the ball over a bit more than usual and didn't shoot especially well, but outrebounded UIS 30-20 and got to the foul line 22 times, converting on 16 (73%).

Butler encounters a familiar face on the opposing sidelines when they travel to New York to face former Wisconsin-Milwaukee coach Bruce Pearl's Tennessee Volunteers in the NIT Season Tip-off semifinals. Game time is Wednesday, November 22, at 7:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised live on ESPN2.
