DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs held the host Valparaiso Crusaders scoreless for six-and-a-half minutes in the first half en route to a 60-47 victory at Valpo's Athletics-Recreation Center. The Bulldogs never trailed, scoring the game's first five points. Valpo twice got within two, at 14-12 and again at 16-14. But the Crusaders stayed at 14 from the 9:25 mark until a Urule Igbavboa free throw ended the scoring drought with 2:51 left in the half. Valpo didn't manage a field goal until 0:13 remained in the period. In all, Butler ended the half on a 16-3 run to lead 32-17 at halftime. The Bulldog lead grew to as much as 20 at 53-33 in the second half. Valpo twice cut the deficit to 11 but could get no closer, and the Bulldogs rolled to a 60-47 win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Mike Green. With Valpo focusing a great deal of its defensive efforts on A. J. Graves, Green took advantage of the increased scoring opportunities, leading all scorers with 16 points--his third consecutive game with that point total. He also chipped in four assists and three rebounds.

Graves had 13 points on just six field goal attempts and 7-of-7 from the foul line. Julian Betko had eight points and three rebounds. Brian Ligon added seven points and three rebounds. Pete Campbell finished with six points off the bench. Brandon Crone had five points and six rebounds in a limited 17 minutes due to foul trouble. Marcus Nellems added three points and four rebounds, and Willie Veasley had two points. Valpo was led by Brandon McPherson's 14 points.

It was good to see the shots dropping early, and the defense was impressive, particularly in the middle of the first half. Both teams committed 14 turnovers, but the Bulldogs held an 18-7 advantage in points off turnovers. That, coupled with Valpo's 42% foul shooting, prevented the Crusaders from seriously challenging in the second half.

The Bulldogs get an early jump on Horizon League play when they host the Cleveland State Vikings in the HL opener for both squads. Game time is Saturday, December 2, at 8:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
