DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of the Wright State Raiders, dropping a 77-65 decision at the sold-out Nutter Center. The two squads battled to five ties and two lead changes in the opening frame, with Butler holding its biggest lead at 12-6 on a Brandon Crone layup at the 13:46 mark. The final three minutes of the opening frame were ultimately the difference, as a 12-0 run by the Raiders--all coming via three-pointers, capped by William Graham's bank shot at the buzzer--put WSU in control, leading 35-27 at halftime. Butler was forced to play catch-up for the entire second half, and while the Bulldogs were able to pull within three points at 62-59 with 3:28 remaining, they would get no closer. DaShaun Wood's three-pointer gave the Raiders some breathing room, and WSU made 12 free throws over the final 2:30 to seal the win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Wood. Usually I pick a Butler player here, but Wood was definitely the star of the show tonight. He finished with 30 points, seven rebounds, and six assists, and was a perfect 12-of-12 at the free throw line.

For the Bulldogs, Crone led the way with 17 points and seven rebounds. Mike Green added 13 points, eight rebounds, and six assists. Pete Campbell had 13 points and four rebounds. A. J. Graves had a rough night, connecting on just 3-of-16 shots, including only 1-of-9 from three-point range, to finish with 10 points. Brian Ligon had four points and three rebounds. Willie Veasley also finished with four points. Drew Streicher added two points and four rebounds off the bench, while Julian Betko added a pair of free throws for two points.

As smooth and effortless as Butler's offense looked Thursday night at Cleveland State, it was nearly the polar opposite in this game. There were far too many rushed or ill-advised shots at key points in the game for the Bulldogs to have been able to dig themselves out of the hole they dug at the end of the first half. After connecting on a school record 20 three-pointers at a 61% clip Thursday, Butler managed just 5-of-26 (19%) from behind the arc against the Raiders. That, combined with 55% shooting by WSU, was essentially the ball game.

Butler returns home for a pair of non-conference games this week. Up first is Florida Gulf Coast. Game time is Tuesday, February 13, at 7:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
