DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Wright State Raiders won the Horizon League Tournament championship with a 60-55 victory over the Butler Bulldogs at the Nutter Center in Dayton, OH. Butler jumped out to an early 10-0 lead but the Raiders rallied to tie the score at 12 apiece. WSU pushed its lead to six twice, at 30-24 and again at 31-25. But the Bulldogs got a jumper from Pete Campbell and a runner from A. J. Graves ahead of the buzzer to close within 31-29 at halftime. WSU appeared to be on its way to taking control of the game, pushing out to a 43-35 lead with 11:08 to go, but the Bulldogs scored eight straight points to knot things up at 43 each with 7:36 left. The game went back and forth for the next few minutes. A Graves three-pointer gave the Bulldogs a 52-50 lead with just under three minutes remaining. Following an empty possession by each team, Drew Burleson converted a layup to tie the game, then DaShaun Wood blocked a Graves layup and buried a three-pointer at the other end to give the Raiders a 55-52 lead with 1:06 left. Brandon Crone made a layup off an inbounds play to pull Butler within one. Vaughn Duggins split a pair of free throws, then Crone did the same at the other end, keeping the margin at one, 56-55. Will Graham made both of his free throws with 11 seconds left, setting up Butler's final possession. Graves pump-faked Wood in the air and slid around him for a potential game-tying three-pointer, but it bounced away and the Raiders pulled down the rebound. Two more Graham free throws clinched a 60-55 victory for the NCAA Tournament-bound Raiders.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Wood. The Tournament MVP led all scorers with 27 points, including 6-of-10 from three-point range. He also pulled down eight rebounds, dished out five assists, and made three steals.

Crone led the Bulldogs with 18 points and five rebounds. Graves added 12 points and five assists. Mike Green had eight points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Julian Betko finished with five points. Brian Ligon had four points, as did Willie Veasley. Drew Streicher had two points and three rebounds, while Campbell added two points.

Wright State made a season-high 10 three-pointers, shooting 46% from behind the arc, and had 15 assists on 20 field goals. Most of the damage was done in the first half, as Butler's defense tightened up in the second half, with Streicher and Veasley combining to limit Wood for a good portion of the final frame. The Bulldogs avoided a dry spell to end the first half, but went from a Streicher layup at the 17:39 mark of the second half to a Crone three-pointer with 10:03 to go without a field goal, managing just two free throws over that span. Fortunately Butler's defense got them back into the game, but the Raiders made the plays down the stretch to get the win. Congratulations to Wright State, and best of luck in the Big Dance.

Butler now plays the waiting game. Most of the bracket projections think the Bulldogs will merit an at-large bid, but with the memory of Selection Sunday 2002 lingering in the minds of the Butler faithful, certainly nothing is a given. The brackets will be revealed on Sunday, March 11, at 6:00 p.m. EDT.
