DAVE'S POSTGAME ANALYSIS
The Butler Bulldogs shot a blistering 77% from three-point range in the first half and cruised to a 67-39 victory over the Youngstown State Penguins at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 11-2 lead. YSU was able to cut it down to six at 13-7, but would get no closer. Butler was 10-of-13 from behind the arc in the opening frame, led by Pete Campbell's perfect 5-for-5 effort from long range, and held a 42-18 halftime lead. The Bulldogs' offense cooled off somewhat in the second half, but they kept up their defense and cruised to a 67-39 victory.
PLAYERS OF THE GAME: Campbell and Mike Green. Campbell continued his recent hot streak, finishing with a Butler career-high 17 points. Green had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. He also dished out four assists without a turnover. "He was terrific," said head coach Todd Lickliter. "What can you say? That's what he's capable of. This is the way that I think Mike should play, and he has played this way a lot. We needed him to [tonight]."
Brandon Crone finished with 10 points. Marcus Nellems had nine points and three rebounds, while Julian Betko added six points and four rebounds. A. J. Graves also finished with six points, coming off the bench for just 13 first-half minutes before spending the second half in the trainer's room. Afterwards, Lickliter said Graves was "depleted" after last Thursday's surgery to remove all four wisdom teeth and just needs to get rehydrated, but that it was nothing directly stemming from the surgery itself. Brian Ligon had three points. YSU was led by Keston Roberts' 11 points.
YSU seemed intent on forcing Butler to hit jump shots, and the Bulldogs were more than happy to oblige. Butler's 42 points off its 14 made three-pointers eclipsed YSU's final total score. Defensively, the Bulldogs held the Penguins to 31% shooting, and limited leading scorers Quin Humphrey (averaging 17.7 ppg coming into tonight's game) and Roberts (16.4) to just nine and 11 points, respectively.
Butler concludes its three-game homestand with a game against the Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix on "Pack the House" Day at Hinkle. Game time is Saturday, January 20, at 2:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
