MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs closed the first half on a 17-2 run, withstood a second half charge, and eventually pulled away to an 83-64 victory over the Bradley Braves at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Bradley jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before the Bulldogs scored five unanswered points. In total there were seven lead changes and four ties in the opening frame, with the teams battling to a 17-17 tie with 6:12 remaining in the half. The Bulldogs then outscored the Braves 17-2 to take a 34-19 halftime lead. Neither team shot well in the first half--Bradley at 27%, Butler at 33%--but the Bulldogs did make 14-of-16 free throws. Butler pushed its lead to as many as 22 at 46-24 with 16:09 to go. That's when Bradley slowly started to chip away at the deficit. Butler held a 59-41 lead at the 10:26 mark when the Braves went on a 12-0 run to pull within six. They would get no closer, as the Bulldogs responded with a 15-3 spurt to put the game out of reach and cruised to an 83-64 win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Willie Veasley. With the perimeter attack struggling early, Butler needed to find points in the lane, and Veasley provided a nice spark off the bench, scoring eight of his career-high 12 points in the first half. He also pulled down four rebounds and had a pair of steals.

A. J. Graves led all scorers with 21 points along with three rebounds. Mike Green overcame a 3-of-14 shooting night with a 10-of-12 effort at the foul line en route to 17 points, nine rebounds, and six assists. Matt Howard added 14 points and six rebounds. Julian Betko finished with eight points and four rebounds. Drew Streicher added six points and three rebounds. Pete Campbell, making his first appearance since suffering a knee injury against Ohio State, hit his first three-point attempt and finished with three points. Avery Jukes added a late basket in his Butler debut for two points. Bradley was led by Daniel Ruffin and Tyrone Scott-Cole, who finished with 11 points each.

Another key for the Bulldogs in the first half was their defense, forcing 10 Bradley turnovers which led to a 15-2 Butler advantage in points off turnovers. The shots finally started falling in the second half as the Bulldogs shot 57% overall and 60% from three-point range. Both teams finished with 32 rebounds.

Butler goes on a two-game road trip before Horizon League play begins in earnest. It starts with a first-ever trip to Florida Gulf Coast. Game time is Saturday, December 22, at 7:00 p.m. EST.
