MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Cleveland State Vikings ran their Horizon League record to a perfect 6-0 with a 56-52 victory over the Butler Bulldogs at the Wolstein Center. CSU led the entire first half, jumping out to an early 4-0 lead. Butler tied the game on three occasions but could never pull ahead in the opening frame. The Vikings' biggest lead came at 31-23 with about a minute to go before halftime, but A. J. Graves hit a three-pointer, his lone made triple of the game, to make it 31-26 at the half. CSU matched its largest lead at 36-28, but the Bulldogs went on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 38. Butler took its first and only lead of the game at 44-42 on a Mike Green layup with just under eight minutes to go. After battling to the game's seventh tie at 46-46, CSU took the lead for good with a 7-2 run, capped by a Cedric Jackson three-pointer, to make it 53-48 with 3:07 left. The Bulldogs closed to within three at 55-52 and had several opportunities over the final minute-plus but could not capitalize on any of them. Following a J'Nathan Bullock missed jumper, Butler turned the ball over and Green had to foul to prevent an uncontested breakaway layup. D'Aundray Brown missed the front end of the one-and-one, Bullock missed a tip-in attempt, and Butler corralled the rebound. Pete Campbell missed a three-pointer, then Graves made a steal but missed his three-point attempt and Butler was forced to foul again. George Tandy missed the front end of his one-and-one, giving the Bulldogs one final opportunity. But Julian Betko missed a three-pointer that would have tied the game, and Bullock made a free throw to put the game out of reach, clinching a 56-52 win for the Vikings.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Campbell. Pete followed his 8-of-11 performance from three-point range a year ago at CSU with a 5-for-7 effort tonight for 15 points. He also pulled down five rebounds.

Matt Howard led all scorers with 16 points to go with eight rebounds and four blocks. Green overcame first half foul trouble to finish with 12 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Graves struggled again from the floor, hitting on just 2-of-11 shots and missing his lone free throw attempt for five points along with four steals. Willie Veasley and Drew Streicher had two points each. CSU was led by Bullock and Jackson, who finished with 14 each.

Campbell was 5-of-7 from three point range; the rest of the team was 1-of-16. Butler forced 17 turnovers while committing 13, yet the Vikings had a 14-11 advantage in points off turnovers. Far too many missed opportunities, especially in the final minute, and the Bulldogs were unable to take advantage.

Butler's two-game road swing through northeast Ohio concludes with a trip to Youngstown State to battle the Penguins. Game time is Saturday, January 19, at 7:05 p.m.
