MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The visiting Drake Bulldogs held the Butler Bulldogs to just one field goal over the final eight minutes to earn a 71-64 win at Hinkle Fieldhouse as part of ESPNU BracketBusters. The first half saw five ties and nine lead changes. Drake held a four-point on four separate occasions, the final coming at 25-21 with 5:44 left in the opening frame. Butler's biggest lead in the first half was three points, a margin which they reached four times, including at 34-31 at the 2:50 mark. But Drake closed the half on a 7-1 run to take a 38-35 lead at halftime. Following a Josh Young three-pointer to open scoring in the second half, Butler went on an 8-0 run to take a 43-41 lead with 17:05 remaining. Neither team could pull away as the lead changed hands several times. It was tied at 54 apiece when a Julian Betko layup and a pair of Matt Howard free throws gave Butler a 58-54 lead with 8:11 to go. Drake would outscore Butler 17-6 from that point forward, starting with a 9-0 run to take the lead for good at 63-58 with just under five minutes remaining. Howard's layup with 3:34 left was Butler's final field goal of the contest. Butler managed just four A. J. Graves free throws thereafter, as Drake got a layup and made 6-of-7 free throws down the stretch to seal a 71-64 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Howard. Matt was a rebound away from a double-double, finishing with 16 points and nine rebounds.

Graves led Butler with 18 points. Mike Green added 12 points, five rebounds, and four assists before fouling out. Pete Campbell had 11 points and four rebounds off the bench. Betko finished with five points. Willie Veasley added two points. Drake was lad by Young's game-high 25 points.

The stat of the game for me: Butler had eight assists against just one turnover in the first half; in the second half, that dropped to two assists and nine turnovers. After allowing Drake to shoot 54% in the first half, Butler held the visitors to 36% in the second. The turning point was after Butler took a four point lead at 58-54. The host Bulldogs had 12 possessions from that point forward, and scored on just three. Drake had 13 possessions over that same span, and scored on nine of them (17 points).

Butler closes out the regular season with a pair of Horizon League games. Up first is a key battle against the second place Wright State Raiders, the only team that can still catch Butler in the standings. Game time is Thursday, February 28, at 9:00 p.m. EST. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE GAME TIME HAS CHANGED FROM THE ORIGINAL SCHEDULE. The game will be televised live on ESPNU. Hope to see you there.
