MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS
The Butler Bulldogs overcame a cold-shooting first half and made some key shots down the stretch in defeating the Green Bay Phoenix 62-57 at the Resch Center. Butler used a 6-0 run to take a 12-7 lead at the 11:03 mark of the first half. Green Bay responded with a 9-2 spurt to regain a 16-14 advantage. The two teams only scored six points each over the final seven minutes of the half, with the Phoenix holding a 22-20 halftime lead. A Ryan Tillema jumper at the 17:47 mark gave Green Bay its biggest lead of the game at 24-20. Butler eventually tied the game at 29 apiece on an A. J. Graves three-pointer, then took the lead for good when Mike Green's layup and free throw put the Bulldogs ahead 32-29 with 13:59 remaining. Butler pushed its lead to 10 at 47-37 and again at 49-39. The Phoenix then scored eight unanswered points to make it a two-point game, 49-47, at the 4:18 mark. That's when Pete Campbell buried back-to-back three-pointers to give the Bulldogs some breathing room at 55-47. Graves made all six of his free throws in the final 1:30, with another from Green sealing a 62-57 victory.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Green. After being held to two points in the first half, Mike finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and four steals.
Graves led all scorers with 16 points along with three steals. Campbell finished with 12 points. Matt Howard added 10 points and five rebounds. Julian Betko and Willie Veasley each finished with four points and three rebounds. Drew Streicher added two points and four rebounds. Green Bay was led by Terry Evans' 14 points and 15 rebounds.
After shooting just 3-of-19 from three-point range against the Phoenix at Hinkle last month, Butler managed just 1-of-15 from behind the arc in the first half tonight. The Bulldogs shot just 28% overall in the opening frame, but kept it close by forcing 9 Green Bay turnovers and pulling down nine offensive rebounds. Butler connected on 7-of-17 three-pointers (41%) and shot 52% overall in the second half. No shots were more important than Campbell's two triples to end Green Bay's run and give momentum back to the Bulldogs. Another good road win in league play.
Butler concludes its three-game road trip with a visit to Milwaukee to face the Panthers. Game time is Tuesday, February 12, at 7:00 pm EST. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
