MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs clinched at least a share of the regular season Horizon League title with a 51-46 victory over the UIC Flames at the UIC Pavilion. UIC came out in a zone defense, and as a result, Butler shot primarily three-pointers the entire game. After falling behind 2-0, A. J. Graves hit consecutive triples to give the Bulldogs an early 6-2 advantage. UIC tied it at 6, then a Drew Streicher three-pointer gave Butler the lead again, one it would not relinquish until the second half. The Bulldogs led 9-8 when an 8-0 run pushed their lead to nine at 17-8 at the 5:28 mark of the opening frame. UIC responded with a 7-0 to pull within two. After both teams exchanged baskets, another three from Graves with just over a minute to go gave Butler a 22-17 lead at halftime. The Flames used an 8-0 run to take a 27-25 lead with 14:45 remaining. The second half was largely a back-and-forth affair, with a total of four ties and six lead changes. UIC got a pair of free throws from Robert Bush with 4:37 left to pull ahead 43-42. A Zach Hahn jumper put the Bulldogs back on top 44-43. Following several empty possessions by each squad, Mike Green drove into the zone and wrapped a perfect pass around UIC's defense down to Streicher for a layup with 1:49 to go. Jermaine Dailey put back a missed layup and was fouled, converting the conventional three-point play to tie the game at 46 with 1:14 left. Graves made what proved to be the go-ahead basket on a three-pointer with 0:45 to go. Green rebounded a missed shot at the other end and was fouled. It was only UIC's third team foul, so Butler inbounded the ball four more times before the Flames committed their seventh team foul sending Green to the line for a one-and-one with 0:15 remaining. Green missed the front end, giving UIC one more chance to tie, but Josh Mayo's three-point attempt bounced out and Graves sealed the outcome with a pair of late free throws, giving the Bulldogs a 51-46 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Graves. He scored the game's final five points, finishing with 14 for the game, along with four assists, three rebounds, and no turnovers in 38 minutes.

Pete Campbell made four three-pointers for 12 points to go with three rebounds. Hahn had eight points. Streicher finished with five points and six rebounds. Willie Veasley added four points and four rebounds off the bench. Green had three points, six assists, and four rebounds. Julian Betko added three points and three rebounds. Matt Howard finished with two points and four rebounds. UIC was led by Mayo's 15 points.

UIC's zone appeared to have the dual purpose of keeping Green out of the lane and limiting the number of looks Howard got in the post. In that regard, it was successful, as Green attempted just three shots inside the arc and only one free throw, while Howard made the only shot he attempted. The Flames forced the Bulldogs to attack from the perimeter, and they were happy to oblige. 39 of Butler's 51 points came from behind the arc. 15 of Butler 18 field goals were assisted. For the second straight game, the Bulldogs' defense was spectacular, holding the league's top three-point percentage team to just 2-of-14 for the game (14%). Butler shot just 38% overall for the game but held UIC to 33%. The Flames forced 14 Bulldog turnovers, giving UIC an 11-5 advantage in points off turnovers. In the end, Butler made enough three-pointers and played solid defense, and that's what earned the Bulldogs their 25th victory on the season.

Butler returns home for the final three games of the regular season. Up first is a visit from the #16 Drake Bulldogs as part of ESPNU BracketBusters. Game time is Saturday, February 23, at 5:00 p.m. EST. The game will be televised live on ESPN2.
