MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs advanced to the Horizon League title game with a 66-50 victory over the UIC Flames at Hinkle Fieldhouse. UIC led for a good portion of the opening frame, holding its biggest lead at 16-11 at the 10:18 mark. Over the next 18 minutes, Butler outscored the Flames 42-13 to take a 53-29 advantage with 12:03 to go in the second half. A late flurry from UIC got the deficit down to 13, but a Pete Campbell three-pointer put an exclamation point on a 66-50 win.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Mike Green. Green took over at the end of the first half, scoring eight of Butler's final 16 points in the frame while assisting on the other eight. For the game, Green finished with 19 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.

Campbell nailed five three-pointers for 15 points along with three rebounds. A. J. Graves added 14 points and six rebounds. Matt Howard had eight points and five rebounds. Drew Streicher finished with four points and three rebounds, and his defense was largely responsible for holding Josh Mayo to five points (all in the first half) on 2-of-13 shooting. Julian Betko and Zach Hahn finished with three point apiece. UIC was led by Robert Kreps' 15 points.

After a slow start in which the Flames crashed the offensive glass to the tune of a 14-2 first half advantage in second chance points, Butler took over the game. Ball movement was crisp (15 assists on 22 baskets), defense improved (UIC was held to 27% shooting in the second half and 30% for the game), as did rebounding (Butler outrebounded UIC 20-17 in the second half).

Butler will next host Cleveland State for the Horizon League championship. Game time is Tuesday, March 11, at 9:00 p.m. EDT. The game will be televised live on ESPN. Hope to see you there.
