MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs used a 15-2 first half run to take control of the game and defeat the visiting Loyola Ramblers 63-50 at Hinkle Fieldhouse. There were two ties and five lead changes to start the game. Butler took the lead for good on a Pete Campbell three-pointer to make it 11-9 at the 14:09 mark. Loyola pulled within one at 13-12 following a J. R. Blount three-pointer. That's when the Bulldogs made their run, scoring 15 of the next 17 points to take a 28-14 lead with 6:24 to go in the half. The Ramblers shaved five points off their deficit to get within nine at halftime, 32-23. After a Drew Streicher dunk to open the second half, Loyola scored six unanswered points to make it 34-29 with 17:58 left, but would get no closer. A 10-2 Butler run gave the Bulldogs some breathing room, and their lead would not dip below seven from that point forward, swelling to as many as 15 points late before a late Blount layup set the final margin at 13, 63-50.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Matt Howard. The freshman forward finished with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds to go with two steals and two blocks.

Campbell also finished with 15 points. Mike Green had 13 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Willie Veasley added seven points and five rebounds off the bench. Streicher and A. J. Graves finished with five points apiece. Julian Betko had three points. Zach Hahn did not score but dished out four assists. Loyola was led by Blount's game-high 16 points.

There were a couple of interesting first half/second half splits. Butler turned the ball over just twice in the opening frame but committed nine miscues in the second half. Loyola had six offensive rebounds in the first half, but just one after halftime. The Bulldogs held a 29-26 rebounding advantage for the game. Butler coach Brad Stevens was pleased with the Bulldogs' defensive effort. Butler forced 13 turnovers, eight coming via steals, and held the Ramblers to just under 40% shooting overall and 31% from three-point range.

The Bulldogs wrap up their brief two-game homestand when they host the UIC Flames. Game time is Saturday, January 26, at 2:00 p.m. EST. Hope to see you there.
