MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs jumped out to a 14-2 lead and never trailed in defeating the Loyola Ramblers 66-55 at the Gentile Center. Matt Howard scored six of Butler's first 12 points, with the other six coming via a pair of three-pointers from A. J. Graves, his first made triples in Horizon League play this season. Loyola pulled within four at 19-15, but the Bulldogs kept their lead between six and nine for the remainder of the first half, holding a 29-21 lead at halftime. Butler pushed its lead out to 12 at 35-23, but a 9-0 Rambler run cut that lead to three, 35-32. Loyola pulled within three one other time, at 40-37. Butler put the game away with a 17-5 run over the next five minutes, as the lead would not drop below 11 en route to a 66-55 victory.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Howard. After being limited to six minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, the freshman scored 13 second half points, finishing with a game-high 19 points along with five rebounds.

Mike Green had another solid all-around game, with 15 points, six assists, and five rebounds. Graves had seven points and three rebounds. Julian Betko hit a pair of key second half three-pointers for six points. Drew Streicher added five points and five rebounds. Willie Veasley had four points and four rebounds off the bench, while Avery Jukes also finished with four points. Pete Campbell scored three points, and Zach Hahn added three points and three assists. Loyola was led by J. R. Blount's 16 points.

It was good to see the Bulldogs lead a game from start to finish. Butler shot 46% overall and 45% from three-point range. Turnovers were a bit higher than normal (14), but the Bulldogs did enough with their other possessions to keep the miscues from doing too much damage. Plus, Butler still held a 17-11 advantage in points off turnovers.

Butler returns home for a pair of games. Up first is the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Phoenix. Game time is Thursday, January 10, at 9:00 p.m. EST. Please note that the game time was pushed back to 9 to accomodate ESPNU's television coverage. Hope to see you there.
