MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS

The Butler Bulldogs never trailed and overcame a slow start to the second half in defeating the Michigan Wolverines 79-65 in the opening round of the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage, AK. A three-pointer from Pete Campbell broke an early 5-5 tie to give the Bulldogs a lead they would not lose. Back-to-back Campbell three-pointers keyed an 8-0 run to put the Bulldogs up 18-8 at the 13:40 mark. Following a three-pointer by Michigan's Manny Harris, the Bulldogs reeled off 10 unanswered points to take a 28-11 lead. An 8-0 Michigan run pulled the Wolverines to within nine. The lead fluctuated between seven and 12, with the Bulldogs taking a 40-32 halftime lead. Michigan started the second half on a 7-0 run, which was actually a 10-0 spurt going back to the end of the first half to cut Butler's lead to 40-39. Campbell hit another three to start a 6-0 Butler run to give the Bulldogs some breathing room. Michigan cut the deficit to three at 51-48 when Butler made four straight three-pointers--two by A. J. Graves and one each by Campbell and Mike Green--to take control at 63-48. Following a Harris layup, the Bulldogs nailed three more three-pointers to take a 72-50 lead, their biggest of the game. Michigan closed the game on a 13-4 run, but the Bulldogs prevailed, 79-65.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Campbell. Pete was 6-of-11, all three-pointers, to lead all scorers with 18 points. He hit several of those when Butler was in need of some offense. Campbell also had three rebounds.

Three other Bulldogs finished in double figures. Graves finished with 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting from behind the arc. Green added 14 points, eight assists, and five rebounds. Matt Howard had his first career double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Julian Betko finished with eight points, three rebounds, and three assists. Drew Streicher had five points and three assists. Shawn Vanzant hit his first career three-pointer to finish with three points, while fellow freshman Zach Hahn added two points. Michigan was led by DeShawn Sims' 14 points.

Butler was 17-of-32 from three-point range (53%), but almost more impressive was the ball movement leading to those shots. The Bulldogs had 19 assists on 25 made baskets against just seven turnovers. They held their own on the boards as well, as Michigan held a slight 30-29 rebounding advantage. They struggled defensively at times, but came up with key stops and rebounds when needed in order to pull away in the second half.

Butler now awaits the winner of the Virginia Tech/Eastern Washington game. Game time is Friday, November 23, at 9:30 p.m. EST.
