MY POSTGAME ANALYSIS
The Butler Bulldogs defeated the Marian Knights 83-49 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Butler's final exhibition tune-up. Butler scored the game's first six points and never looked back, leading by as many as 17 in the opening frame at 29-12 at the 3:37 mark before taking a 34-20 lead at halftime. Marian would get no closer than 15 in the second half as Butler rolled to an 83-49 victory.
PLAYER OF THE GAME: Pete Campbell. The senior sharpshooter led all scorer with 20 points, including 6-of-9 from three-point range.
Joining Campbell in double figures were A. J. Graves (15 points, three steals) and Matt Howard (13 points, four rebounds, three assists). Mike Green added eight points and three assists. Elliot Engelmann finished with seven points. Drew Streicher had six points and four rebounds, while Grant Leiendecker also finished with six points along with three rebounds. Julian Betko had three points. Willie Veasley and Alex Anglin finished with two points each. Veasley played 11 minutes in the first half before leaving with an apparent knee injury. He did not return. When asked about Willie's condition, head coach Brad Stevens said, "[The trainers have] an idea right now, but they're going to further evaluate it and let us know. Hopefully he's all right." Ben Slaton rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs with a free throw for one point. Marian was led by Hamilton Southeastern grad Anthony Furlin's 14 points.
Stevens commented after Thursday's game that scoring can often mask other problems. Nowhere was that more evident than in the first half tonight. Despite holding a 14-point lead, shooting 59% overall and 55% from three-point range, Butler managed to turn the ball over 12 times with just six assists. Seven of those turnovers were by the senior backcourt of Green (3) and Graves (4). Things were much better in the second half as the Bulldogs committed just four turnovers (none by Green or Graves) while dishing out 11 assists. For the game, Butler shot 14-for-27 (52%) from behind the arc and 56% overall.
With the exhibition season behind them, the Bulldogs hit the road to open the regular season with a trip to Muncie to face the Ball State Cardinals. Game time is Friday, November 9, at 7:00 p.m. Hope to see you there.
